[TechNavio]: The DPI Market will Grow at 36% CAGR

A new report by TechNavio forecasts that ".. the Global DPI market will grow at a CAGR of 36.45 percent over the period 2013-2018 .. Although at present the EMEA region is a major contributor to the market, the APAC region is expected to emerge as a strong contributor to this market. ISPs and government organizations are the biggest adopters of DPI technology in the market .. with the increase in the use of bandwidth-intense applications such as P2P traffic and real-time multimedia content over the last few years, ISPs are increasingly adopting DPI solutions to manage and monitor the network".

The report identifies Allot Communications, Cisco, Procera Networks and Sandvine as "key vendors" and Arbor Networks, Bivio Networks, Endace, Huawei Technologies, ipoque, Quosmos and Tableau Software as "Other Prominent Vendors" (although some are no longer players in the DPI/traffic management market).

A year ago TechNavio had a similar forecast (see "[TechNavio] DPI Market to Grow at 35% 2012-16" - here).

Government DPI Market will Reach $330.2M by 2015

Yet another DPI market size report - this time focusing on the government sector.

The report, from Infiniti Research (available from the Report Linker) states that "For the sake of this report, the deep packet inspection market for the government sector includes vendors providing DPI technology based devices, solutions and offerings to various government agencies. This report does not include vendors who primarily cater to internet service providers with only a small focus on the government sector .. companies covered are Qosmos (here), Endace, ipoque, Bivio Networks (here)".

See "Deep Packet Inspection Market for Government Sector 2010-2015" - here and here (PDF)

"Deep Packet Inspection Market for Government Sector – 2010-2015 report forecasts that this market will reach $330.2M by 2015 growing at a CAGR of 30%".

Sounds high, considering the current size of the companies covered - as well as the total size of the DPI market (here). I'd recommend to look also at Verint (here). For example, Verint's IP-Probe product (here and here) is "based on in-house Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) expertise for up to 10 gigabit/sec"

Key market drivers include:

• Imperative need for increasing surveillance on the internet
• Increasingly effective and growing number of cyber attacks on government websites
• Increase in bandwidth congestion in key government areas as result of unwanted bandwidth usage
• Rising need for censorship in some areas of the internet

DPI Announcements: Data Retention System from Bivio

Bivio Networks announced the launch of "Data Retention System, a high-performance data collection and retention system to strengthen cyber security operations for network operators and government agencies  .. The Bivio Data Retention System uses proprietary record correlation technology combined with deep packet inspection (DPI) network probing to enable contextualized multi-source data collection and retention. The system links together disparate pieces of data to form a single record that represents the full context of the collected information"

See "Bivio Networks Launches Data Retention System" - here.

Key features include [see chart below]: 10Gb/s DPI-based network probing enabling application and user context extraction and Mobile-specific protocol support (WiMax, 3G, 4G/LTE) for wireless network integration

“Existing cyber investigative data collection and retention tools focus primarily on data recording rather than efficiently capturing and generating actionable information,” said Dr. Elan Amir, president and CEO of Bivio Networks. “The Bivio Data Retention System advances the state of the art by delivering data-rich, contextualized information, enabling cyber analysts to detect and respond to complex security threats.”

DPI Announcements: Bivio's New Network Content Control System

Bivio Networks announced "the launch of its Network Content Control System (NCCS), the industry’s first fully integrated traffic enforcement, Web filtering and threat prevention system for service providers (SPs), carriers, government agencies and large enterprise customers alike"

See "Bivio Networks Introduces Network Content Control System" - here.

"Protecting network users from cyber threats including phishing and malware hosts is crucial for network managers and operators. Furthermore, specific network usage policies require accurate enforcement regardless of the access device type such as laptop computers or mobile smart phones. The Bivio NCCS is a carrier-grade networking platform that utilizes advanced deep-packet inspection (DPI) technology to deliver a rich set of functionality to identify, manage and control network traffic granularly, on a per-user basis, or universally on a network-wide level."

Dr. Elan Amir, president and CEO of Bivio Networks said “.. The NCCS delivers industry-leading web filtering and security safeguards necessary to keep pace with network threats and eliminate costs associated with deploying multiple load balanced or proxy-based devices"

Product brochure - here. The system uses the Flowinspect DPI engine, a company acquired by Bivio last year (see "Bivio Networks Acquires FlowInspect SpA" - here).
