Sandvine: Streaming Video is 70% (Netflix 37%) of NA Fixed Traffic; BitTorrent is 4.4%

A new study by Sandvine focusing on Africa, the Middle East, and North America (based on data from a selection of Sandvine’s customers), finds that:

  • "Real-Time Entertainment (streaming video and audio) traffic now accounts for over 70% of North American downstream traffic in the peak evening hours on fixed access networks. Five years ago it accounted for less than 35%

  • Netflix (37.1%), YouTube (17.9%), and Amazon Video (3.1%), the top three sources of video traffic on fixed access networks in North America, all saw an increase in traffic share over the levels observed earlier in the year

  • With the growth of video, BitTorrent share continues to see a decline in fixed access bandwidth share, and now accounts for only 5% of total traffic in North America. Last year during the same period it accounted for over 7%".

BITAG Recommends Differentiated Treatment Practices

BITAG (Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group - see "Plans for a New Forum: Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group"- here) announced the ".. publication of its technical report on the subject of Differentiated Treatment of Internet Traffic ..This report touches on a broad range of questions associated with differentiation, but is not intended to address or analyze the economic, legal, regulatory, or public policy issues that the differentiated treatment of Internet access service traffic may raise, focusing instead on the technical issues.

.. network operators make many exceptions to FIFO, using the packet header information to classify packets into flows and treating those flows differently, for example rearranging the order or the timing with which packets are sent, or sending them along different network paths".

Among the contributors and reviewers to the report (see full list below), is Sandvine's CTO, Don Bowman - See - "Sandvine, Internet Leaders Achieve Consensus on Traffic Differentiation" - here.
"Observations:
  • TCP causes recurring momentary congestion.
  • A nominal level of packet discard is normal.
  • The absence of differentiation does not imply comparable behavior among applications. Differentiated treatment can produce a net improvement in Quality of Experience (QoE).
  • Access technologies differ in their capabilities and characteristics.
  • Security of traffic has at times been downgraded to facilitate differentiation techniques.
Recommendations:
  • Network operators should disclose information on differential treatment of traffic.
  • Network operators and ASPs should be encouraged to implement efficient and adaptive network resource management practices.
  • Quality of Service metrics should be interpreted in the context of Quality of Experience.
  • Network operators should not downgrade, interfere with, or block user selected security in order to apply differentiated treatment".

Sandvine CEO: We see IBM as a Big Part of Our Future

Sandvine published its Q3 results (revenues of $27.3 - here - as expected following its preliminary announcement). During the earning call, David Caputo, CEO made several references to the relations with IBM:

    • "IBM was a 10% plus customer [see chart] in the quarter and sold product to three end customers. We also had one 10% plus end customer in the quarter. Together, these customers represented 24% of revenue in Q3. We have no 10% plus customers for the year-to-date, we remain pleased by this diversification.

[Related post "Sandvine: IBM is a 10% Reseller with an "active pipeline of opportunities"  - here]

    • Certainly we are excited that we closed three deals with IBM. We see them as a big part of our future in terms of someone who is looking to integrate best-of-breed solutions.

We have certainly individual countries largely outside of North America we have localized partners that help us with supporting in local language and that sort of thing.

The IBM relationship is continuing to develop. In that, there were workshops recently on some business intelligence initiatives that they are looking to pitch and get trained on enough to do further integration to some of their solutions, but as you could see the mix to direct is a little bit more pronounced as we become a larger player, as we become more familiar with some of the larger customers outside of North America, some of them are feeling more comfortable to take that business direct with us as well".

Digicel: DPI is a Catalyst for VAS Revenues Increase

The Digicel Group (operating communication services in 31 countries to 13.6 million subscribers) has filed for an IPO recently with the SEC (here). The group is a Sandvine customer ("How does DigiCel Use Sandvine?" here and here) and explains in the F-1 form the benefits of DPI:

    "Mobile Data and VAS

..VAS is an increasingly important portion of Digicel’s revenue, rising from 23.0% of its total mobile service revenue in the year ended March 31, 2013 to 31.2% in the year ended March 31, 2015 and 33.9% in the three months ended June 30, 2015. The increase in VAS has tracked an increase in availability of affordable smartphones, including Digicel-branded Android devices

.. An important catalyst for the increase in VAS has been Digicel’s innovative product and service offerings which include:

    • Service-based packages: Digicel’s data offers have evolved from volume based pricing to charging by service. Digicel’s deep packet inspection platform allows it to price plans based on the specific service that subscribers are consuming as opposed to volume-based pricing.

Digicel is able to offer subscribers data plans that provide access only to one particular site, such as Facebook or Instagram. This capability has allowed Digicel to launch new plans across markets with a range of data allowances along with access to particular websites.

This makes Digicel’s plans more attractive to subscribers because they can more easily understand what they are getting, and it allows Digicel to differentiate its plans from competitors.

    • Free access to Wikipedia [here]: Digicel allows all Digicel subscribers free access to this widely-known source of information on the Internet. Every time a subscriber accesses Wikipedia on the Digicel network, there is a small banner at the top of the page that tells the subscriber that access to the page is provided free of charge courtesy of Digicel.

Digicel believes this is a strong marketing tool and it also benefits Digicel’s subscribers in terms of free access to this information. This represents an opportunity to illustrate to Digicel’s subscribers the value of the Internet by showcasing the type of services that subscribers can access with an Internet subscription and is designed to encourage Internet penetration.

ALU Transforms Telefonica's IP Network; Sandvine Remains Happy

    Alcatel-Lucent
    7750-12

Alcatel-Lucent announced it is "transforming Telefónica’s fixed and mobile networks with its IP technology and services expertise to meet growing consumption of data and video by its customers – while ensuring optimal operational cost and efficiency".

Later in the release (see below), ALU states the 7750 Service Router (7750 SR-12) will be part of the transformation. Among its many features, the 7750 is also ALU's DPI based traffic manager used in both fixed and mobile networks.

As Telefonica is a long-time Sandvine customer for its DPI needs, I asked Sandvine about the impact of this project on their business with Telefonica. Their response follows:

"Alcatel Lucent has always been a vendor into Telefonica, and we sold into Telefonica using them until a little while ago. We now use a combination of IBM and direct sales. In short, the threat of replacement by an integrated NEV has been there the whole time, but Telefonica has consistently chosen to go best-of-breed with Sandvine – a decision that is made centrally. We are by now well entrenched in their business processes. The Telefonica Group remains a big customer of ours as you know, and while you can never say never, we are happy with that relationship"

    Back to the announcement:

"Video content is causing data traffic to rise dramatically across Telefónica’s networks .. Demand is also growing amongst Telefónica’s mobile subscribers, as well as amongst customers of its fixed access business, driven by the operator’s announcement earlier this year that it will triple the speeds of its fiber fixed-line services. As a result of this demand, Telefónica aims to increase network capacity and reduce complexity to allow it to manage traffic with even greater efficiency:
    • Alcatel-Lucent will replace older routers within the network, using its IP routing portfolio to perform core routing and layer two and three edge routing functions and act as a broadband network gateway for the provision of residential services. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy the 7950 Extensible Routing System, the 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (7450 ESS-MM), and the 7750 Service Router (7750 SR-12).

      5620 SAM – Assurance visualization
      for network & service operations
    • End-to-end management will be provided by the Alcatel-Lucent 5620 Service Aware Manager

    • Alcatel-Lucent offers a comprehensive portfolio of hardware and software based routing functionalities for enhanced network efficiency, allowing service providers to address the overwhelming growth in video and data traffic and offering a seamless migration toward virtualized network architecture, using NFV. Alcatel-Lucent recently announced an extension of its collaboration agreement with Telefónica to test NFV functions, following outstanding lab test results achieved by the Alcatel-Lucent Virtualized Service Router.

Sandvine Buys Momac for $7.7M; Enhances Customer Engagement Capabilities

Sandvine announced that it has "..acquired all of the shares of MoMac B.V. a Netherlands-based company that sells cloud-based, customer engagement solutions to mobile operators. Sandvine has purchased all of the shares of Momac in exchange for €7 million (approximately $7.7 million USD), plus certain retention-based management incentives. Momac has 26 employees, based in Rotterdam. Sandvine expects that the acquisition will not have a material impact to revenue nor earnings in fiscal 2015, and expects the acquisition to be slightly accretive to earnings in 2016.

Momac will enhance Sandvine’s portfolio of Revenue Generation products for its communications service provider (CSP) customers. Specifically, Momac’s products will work with Sandvine OutReach  [see "Sandvine Enables CSPs to Interact Directly w/Subscribers; How does it Work?" - hereto significantly enhance its customer engagement capabilities, such that subscribers are presented with the most relevant message, offer or alert at the right time, on any screen, such that they can take immediate action".

Sandvine: Many of the [Many] 50 PCRF Vendors have Dead Roadmaps

    Sandvine's SDE
After showing success in the PCRF market (see "Sandvine Wins 3 PCRF Deals" - here), Sandvine's CEO, Dave Caputo, provided his insights for the market and opportunity during the 2nd quarter earning call:
    • We see a PCRF replacement cycle occurring as the demand of voice-over-LTE overwhelmed earlier generation products. That plays extremely well into the strength of Sandvine's PCRF .. the win was the mix of new and existing customers

    • Sandvine has the only PCRF that supports mobile and cable standards as well as other interfaces that facilitates deployment in any mobile, fixed, or converged network

    • We happily would work with any existing PCRF vendor that a service provider has deployed

    • we've seen is there has been some consolidation in the space notably Oracle has made some moves here. And as people are renewing their support and maintenance for as aspects of roadmaps might being abandoned

    • And there were many, many players, there is as many as may be 50 PCRF vendors [here] out there. And lot of them only had success with one, two or three customers with the exception of a couple of the top players .. and so you could imagine there are some very dead roadmaps out there on those 50 vendors that only had one, two, three, four wins

Is there a problem in the DPI Market? (Part 2)

Dave Caputo [pictured], CEO of Sandvine, provided his views on the growth of the DPI market, in the company's Q2 earning call (revenues were $28.6M, as pre-announced, see "Sandvine Reports Q2 2015 Results" - here):

Q (by Richard Tse - Cormark Securities): Dave, can you give us a sense of the growth rate in the DPI market. We've seen only a competitor's sort of announced similar pull back or slowdown there. Maybe a tougher criterion so clearing these deals is there -- just a broader slowdown of market or just something else that sort of triggered all these requirements both getting other incremental and technical sign offs?

A: "well, I think this is the key question here. Based on a lot announcement in the past few days and are slower than expected start to the first half of the year. It's hard to imagine that the market or the market will likely not grow as quickly this year. And while we don't give guidance, we can say it will be a challenge to grow revenue as quickly as we did last year. But there are still opportunities for Sandvine to grow faster than the market .."

Q (by Alex Henderson [pictured]- Needham and Company):  ". talking with the folks over at [Allot] it seemed quite clear in the way they discussed the trajectory of their business that they are seeing significant pressure on the growth rate particularly around the optimization portion of their portfolio whereas the service enablement functionality is actually still reasonably healthy. And they are talking about pivoting their strategy towards security because of that. They are really describing that is sort of change in the nature of the market as opposed to something they think is temporary. Now I know you guys have always focused more on the service enablement side but would you concur with that view of the world that the service enablement is the primary driver of the business going forward and that optimization is becoming less important?

A: "Yes. I would certainly agree with the idea of service creation and business intelligence has been the key drivers of our business for the past three and may be in four years. If I recall last year the traffic optimization and other part of our business was around 30% of our business back from -- if you back five years ago it had been 100% of our business. Although I do believe we grew at last year as well. And so I would say in general traffic management especially blunt force traffic management shaping and throttling, you could do increasingly available switches and routers out there .."

    Sandvine Wins 3 PCRF Deals

Sandvine announced that in the "second fiscal quarter of 2015, three mobile operators selected Sandvine’s universal Policy Charging and Rules Function (PCRF) to enable a diverse set of use cases for their networks [see "Sandvine Will Compete on PCRF Projects" - here]
    • Two of the orders received came from regional North American mobile operators:
      • one of which plans to use Sandvine’s PCRF as an essential component of their upcoming VoLTE rollout to provide guaranteed quality of service (QoS) for voice calls [see "Sandvine Enhances PCRF w/VoLTE and VoWiFi Support"- here]

      • the other regional operator will be using Sandvine’s PCRF to enforce data quotas for their prepaid subscribers.
     Sandvine's ServiceDesigner interface
    • The third order received was from a tier-1 operator in Eastern Europe who will be using Sandvine’s PCRF for a number of use cases focusing on service creation. Some of these include application-based plans that allow subscribers to purchase access to individual applications of their choosing, a “turbo boost” button which will allow subscribers to temporarily increase the speed of their LTE connection, and family plans to enable an account to share monthly data usage between multiple users"

Is there a Problem in the DPI Market?

Note the similarity. Both Allot Communications and Sandvine issued 2 press releases each, just after their 2nd quarter has ended. A bad one and an $8M optimistic one (see below). Also, for the first time since it became a public company, Allot provided revenue guidance, expecting "revenues to range between $100-$105 million for full year 2015", compared to $117M in 2014, a decline of close to 9%, meaning also they expect the revenues for H2 2015 ($49-54M) will be similar to H1 ($51M).

Based on the similarity, it seems that the problem is with a declining market, rather than sales execution. The basic technology and solution (DPI based traffic management) is not as attractive today as it was several years ago, when mobile networks started to see strong demand for data without having the proper infrastructure in place and Net Neutrality was just a proposal.

There are no "bandwidth  hungry" applications anymore you can, as an operator, control or throttle without customers noticing and switching.

The transition to other solutions (analytics, security, VAS, charging) offered now by the DPI players is either not a complete solution (security), generates smaller deals (analytics, as it may be enough to analyze smaller portion of the network) or attractive just in limited regions (monetization).

    • Sandvine said on June 8th that "it has received an expansion order for more than $8 million" (here). and

" it expects revenue for its second quarter to be between $28.0 and $28.5 million ..
The timing of closing certain large deals created variability in our quarterly results but we believe that these opportunities will close soon. Also, as we have discussed on previous conference calls, we are seeing more customer acceptance tests in contracts .. [however!] Sandvine’s book-to-bill ratio in the second quarter was greater than one"
    • Allot announced on July 6th that "three strategic wins across the globe in the second quarter (Q2) of 2015. The new sales, summing approximately $8 million  .. A multi-million dollar order from a new Tier-1 mobile operator in Asia Pacific .. A multi-million dollar order from a new multinational, Tier-1, mobile operator based in Latin America .. A multi-million dollar order from a new Tier-1 Mobile operator in EMEA" (here). And it

      "
expects revenues in the second quarter of 2015 to be in the range of $21-$22 million. The Company also expects to generate a net operating loss in the quarter .. [however!] Allot’s book to bill ratio in the second quarter was above 1 and cash reserves comprise of cash, cash equivalents, bank deposits and marketable securities as of June 30, 2015 were approximately $120 million" (here)

TM/Security Deployments [358]: VMedia [Canada] Uses Sandvine

Sandvine announced that "VMedia Inc. is using Sandvine’s Traffic Management and Network Security products to ensure a high quality of experience for their subscribers.

VMedia, a Sandvine customer since March 2015, provides innovative TV, high-speed internet and home phone services to subscribers in Ontario, Canada. VMedia is well known in its market for a unique IPTV platform that delivers a whole home entertainment experience, enabling subscribers to seamlessly enjoy conventional TV, over the top content, video on demand, and many other apps on their television via a single set top box.

    • VMedia chose to deploy Sandvine’s Traffic Management to ensure that during times of network congestion, subscribers will have the best possible experience when streaming VMedia’s IPTV service, or over-the-top (OTT) video services such as Netflix or CraveTV

    • In addition to deploying Sandvine’s Traffic Management, VMedia has also deployed Sandvine’s Network Security in order to detect and mitigate distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks which could negatively impact the streaming experience of their subscribers. DDoS attacks attempt to make a computer resource or network unavailable, and the network infrastructure of communications service providers (CSPs) such as VMedia serve as a popular target for such malicious attacks".
See "Sandvine Keeps VMedia’s Subscribers And Their Streams Safe" - here.
