[Exact Ventures]: Huawei Became the Largest PCRF Vendor


A new report by Exact Ventures finds that:
  • The Policy Server/PCRF market [in 3Q15] grew 37 percent compared to 3Q14, to $202 million
     
  • We expect that market growth grow by greater than 20 percent for both 2015 and 2016 and that the market will approach $1 billion for 2016
  • Many operators are actively deploying VoLTE, and in some cases with video, prioritizing that traffic above all else is key to maintain and assure high quality of service. Specifically, VoLTE traffic is assigned a quality class identifier (QCI) value of 1, which guarantees a specific bit-rate, minimal packet delay (latency) and packet loss. The PCRF is the functional node within an operator’s network responsible for setting the QCI values for each mobile application.
     
  • During the quarter, Huawei became the largest PCRF vendor by more than doubling revenues year-over-year to $62 million, narrowly edging Ericsson which grew nearly 50 percent versus 3Q14
     
  • Huawei is very strong it its domestic market and other developing regions of Asia Pacific and EMEA where mobile data services are increasingly popular and operators are increasingly sophisticated about segmenting its targeted customers via tiered-data and sponsored data plans.

ITU Adopted Huawei's Video MOS Proposal


Huawei announced that "During the recent ITU-T SG12 Q13/12 and Q14/12 interim meetings held in Berlin Germany:
  • Huawei’s proposed video MOS Umbrella WID project (G.vidmos) was adopted. The project will provide video MOS evaluation guidelines to the industry with consideration of different classification of related factors. 
  • Concurrently, the modification of ITU-T Rec. P.800.1 "Mean Opinion Score (MOS) terminology" with the inclusion of video MOS standardized definitions, suggested by Huawei delegates, was agreed in the meeting.
  • During the meeting, Huawei made a proposal to differentiate the PC and Mobile scenarios based on extensive market analysis. It was also proposed to proceed with H. 265 and 4K resolution video MOS evaluation as soon as possible as one of the next phases of work priorities for video MOS.
Meanwhile, as one of the active participants among video MOS companies, Huawei submitted the audio, video, and audiovisual MOS evaluation models to ITU-T SG12 P.NATS project. This model can be used for the evaluation of real time encryption/non-encryption-based media stream OTT"

[Infonetics]: Business Analysis of the 5 Leading SDP Vendors

 
A recent survey by Shira Levine, research director for service enablement and subscriber intelligence. IHS "profiles and analyzes the top 5 SDP software vendors as identified by service providers: Ericsson, HP, Huawei, OpenCloud and Oracle:
  • Ericsson, Huawei and Oracle have all built strong portfolios, both organically and via acquisition, around the SDP opportunity, and that is reflected in their leadership positions in this year’s scorecard.  However, as the market shifts toward emerging opportunities such as API platforms and alternative delivery models, these established players may get a run for their money from smaller suppliers with a more targeted focus, 
     
    • Ericsson’s longstanding presence in the wireless industry in general—and SDP market specifically—helps it land a leadership position
       
    • Huawei ramped up in the SDP space quickly, gaining market share by selling into developing regions
       
    • Oracle enjoys strong financials, a solid customer base, and a reputation for reliability and support which have helped the company maintain a leadership standing in SDP
       
    • Despite a solid roster of customers, HP is struggling in the SDP market as it addresses financial issues and revamps its product suite
       
    • Smaller player OpenCloud continues to grow by positioning itself as a less expensive and more innovative option to the larger SDP suppliers

Huawei Launches MOS Based Video Experience Measurement


Huawei unveiled its "video experience evaluation system, U-vMOS .. The system measures indicators from sample analysis of subjective video experiences coupled with analysis from related technologies to provide objective assessments on the overall video service experience. It provides a unified standard to measure the user experience which guides operators and the video industry chain in enhancing user satisfaction.




..  Huawei video research teams combined ergonomics, sample research, and in-depth technical studies to identify the top three factors that affect the video experience: video quality, interactive experience, and video view experience. 

Huawei defines three core philosophies in U-vMOS, which can measure these three main factors.
  • Core philosophy 1: Huawei carried out in-depth research on the limits of the human eye and how much resolution it can actually take in. The grading standard from the subjective viewing experience of various users watching videos of different resolutions on screens of different sizes from a typical distance is also defined in the algorithm. U-vMOS supports a resolution ranging from 360P to 8K and video played on screens ranging from 4.5 inches to 100 inches, breaking through the confines of the original vMOS definition in which differences could only be compared across screens with the same resolution. Considering the features of the human eye and actual reactions from viewers over different screens with varying resolutions, a score is assigned with the optimal viewing experience of the human eye as the full score.
     
  • Core philosophy 2: With data from extensive lab tests and verifications, Huawei defined the objective indicators that evaluate user interoperability in varying use scenarios and the viewing experience, including the initial loading time, zapping time, and seek response time. This philosophy enables the U-vMOS to measure user experience indicators throughout the viewing process.
     
  • Core philosophy 3: Huawei takes sample analysis on the subjective preferences of various audiences in different video application scenarios, and sets up a mathematical model that uses those preferences and parameters as weights. Huawei then adds a subjective preference parameter to the formula so that the U-vMOS system can adapt to different scenarios and continue to expand its "knowledge base".

IHS: VoLTE Starts to Pick Up; Huawei Leads the SP VoIP and IMS Market


A new report by Diane Myers [pictured], research director for VoIP, UC and IMS, IHS finds that ".. global service provider VoIP (voice over IP) and IMS (IP multimedia subsystem) revenue was up 46 percent year-over-year in 2Q15, to $1.3 billion .. Spending related to voice over LTE (VoLTE) deployments is starting to pick up, especially in Europe and India, fueling continued strong growth in the service provider VoIP and IMS market ..As well, operators with commercial VoLTE networks in North America and Asia Pacific are purchasing additional capacity as subscriber numbers grow in those regions". 




"Huawei took the lead in overall service provider VoIP and IMS revenue market share in 2Q15 ..  Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, GENBAND and Mavenir (a division of Mitel) also had standout growth from a year ago".

MNO Survey: 5G is Still an Unknown; LTE Materializing


A new survey by Stéphane Téral, research director for mobile infrastructure and carrier economics, IHS in which "operators were interviewed about their LTE network deployment plans, challenges and service offerings" finds that many do not know what 5G networks are:

"The 5G debate has started with great fanfare, hype and confusion, but little substance about what it is exactly and what it is not. For now, the mindset is still locked into mobile broadband as we know it with LTE, so it’s good that the ITU has just stepped in to define 5G in its brand new IMT-2020"

"Half of respondents participating in the study say they have already deployed LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) in their LTE networks [see "GSA: 497M LTE Subscriptions Worldwide" - here and "GSA: 360 LTE Networks Launched; 96 in 2014" - here.. We are slowly but surely moving to true 4G, and that’s good news. However, most users already believe they are on 4G, and that’s the bad news because the experience is far from consistent and is falling short of expectations. How many times does your smartphone display LTE or 4G and you still see the infamous spinning wheel?

[Analysys Mason]: No Change in the $5.8B SDP Market Leaders


A new report by Glen Ragoonanan [pictured], Principal Analyst, and Gorkem Yigit,Research Analyst, Analysys Mason finds that "The service delivery platform market generated USD5.8 billion in revenue worldwide in 2014, up 11% from USD5.2 billion in 2013. LTE's impact on the overall service delivery platform (SDP) market increased, first in subscriber data management (SDM), then policy management (PM), followed by mobile content management and delivery (CMD), and finally, telecoms application servers (TAS) for mobile data and VoLTE services. Virtualised SDPs were being introduced in 2014.



.. the top-five SDP vendors were unchanged. Amdocs returned to the top six, thanks to a severe decline in Cisco's fixed CMD (FCMD): 
  • Ericsson retained its leadership with 9% year-on-year revenue growth – primarily in the content management and delivery (CMD) sub-segment thanks to its acquisitions of Azuki Systems, Fabrix Systems, as well as Microsoft Mediaroom, which forms part of its Media Delivery Network (MDN) solution portfolio. Its other SDP revenue grew, though slower than the overall SDP market
      
  • Huawei Technologies achieved the highest organic growth – 30% year-on-year – thanks to strong growth in the number of LTE subscribers in China because all three major communication service providers (CSPs) are rolling out LTE. It continued to win SDP business from other vendors in EMEA
     
  • Nokia Networks’ revenue only grew by 5% year-on-year, compared with 11% for the overall SDP market. It remained the SDM leader, enjoying wins worldwide. Its acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent could make it the SDP market leader
      
  • Alcatel-Lucent’s revenue growth declined by -7% year-on-year as it restructured and refocused on network virtualisation and VoLTE, which were not significant drivers of SDP spend in 2014
      
  • Oracle had low 4% year-on-year organic growth, compared with 35% inorganic growth in 2013, when it acquired Acme Packet and Tekelec
     
  • Amdocs’ SDP revenue growth was flat in 2014, which reduced its market share, compared with 2013. It re-entered the top-six thanks to Cisco’s decline in fixed CMD (FCMD).

[Survey]: Huawei, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent are the Top IMS Vendors

  
Diane Myers [pictured], research director for VoIP, UC and IMS, IHS (Infonetics Research): "conducted in-depth interviews with global service providers that have IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) core equipment in their networks or will by the end of 2017 and discovered that only 8 percent are running IMS network elements in a network functions virtualization (NFV) environment today .. more are on the path by starting to utilize software running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware as a stepping stone to full NFV. One of the biggest drivers for NFV is the ability to scale services up and down quickly and introduce new network services more efficiently and in a timely manner, which makes IMS a good early fit for NFV".



"80 percent of service provider respondents indicated that parts of their IMS elements will be running in an NFV environment by 2017, which IHS believes is somewhat optimistic. In an open-ended question asking respondents who they consider to be the top three IMS infrastructure vendors, operators most often named Huawei, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent"

[Survey]: OTT Partnerships Drive SDP Deployments; Oracle, Ericsson, Huawei Lead


A new survey of "21 convergent, mobile and cable operators" by Shira Levine, research director for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, IHS (Infonetics Research) finds that "nearly half of respondents identified supporting partnerships with over-the-top (OTT) providers and better monetization of subscriber data as very important drivers behind their service delivery platform (SDP) deployments .. Operators continue to deploy long-standing use cases such as messaging and single sign-on via their SDPs, but they are increasingly looking to expand the capabilities the SDP to support new use cases including partnerships with OTT providers and better monetization of subscriber data” 


  • The majority of respondents have deployed their SDPs on-premises with commercially-available hardware, though virtualized deployments on shared hardware and via an internal cloud are most likely to be under evaluation
     
  • Consequently, support for deployment on commercially-available hardware came in relatively high on the list of key criteria for SDP suppliers, although product reliability and support capabilities topped the list
     
  • Oracle is the SDP supplier cited as a leader by a majority of survey participants, with Ericsson and Huawei following closely behind [links are for product pages]

EE to Pilot Mobile Edge Computing; Needs Multi-Vendor Support


Michelle Donegan reports to LightReading that "UK operator EE plans to run a number of pilots this summer to demonstrate potential use cases for mobile edge computing (MEC), in a move that shows industry momentum continues to build for the radio access network concept".

Mansoor Hanif [pictured], Director of Radio Access Networks, EE said . "I'm really passionate about MEC … because you're putting the computing power and added value right where the customer needs it most,"



"EE always liked [Nokia Networks'] Liquid Applications, according to Hanif. But the big question was "will it work across our whole network?" Since EE has deployed RAN equipment from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. as well as Nokia, Hanif explained that the operator couldn't roll out network enhancements to only part of its customer base".

[Infonetics]: Huawei and Cisco ($89M) are the PCC Market Leaders

 
Maywun Wong announced in Cisco's Service Provider blog that "Last week, we were thrilled to receive the news that Infonetics scored Cisco Policy Suite as a Leader in the Policy Management Scorecard. 

Cisco was one of only two leaders recognized by Infonetics in this space and was recognized for building “… up its position in the market rapidly after its acquisition of BroadHop [Dec '12; here], demonstrating strong momentum around policy virtualization”.

[ABI]: Citrix, Openwave and Ericsson Lead the $400M Optimization Space


ABI Research announced it has evaluated the "..leading vendors for Video, Audio, Web and Data Optimization the Gi-LAN space, and finds Citrix ByteMobile with the most compelling total value proposition, followed by Openwave Mobility and Ericsson. ABI Research finds web and video optimization performance as mainly determined by the x86 architecture, and the vendors differentiate along the lines of packaging and the depth of value adding features such as monetization, big data analytics and traffic management bundles.

The leaders in each category include:

  • Overall: Citrix ByteMobile, Openwave Mobility, Ericsson:
     
    • The Citrix ByteMobile ATM takes top honors with its long standing market reach and total value proposition of its web and video optimization, content caching, and added value in DPI, traffic policy enforcement
       
    • Openwave Mobility takes second honors and keeps up the pressure with an innovation clean sweep in depth and breadth, analytics, subscriber and monetization innovation focus

Huawei Launches a Congestion-Aware, High Throughput Router


Huawei announced recently the "release of the industry's first high throughput router (HTR) aimed at providing users with an unprecedented ultra-HD video experience. The HTR could sense congestion status in real-time, intelligently predict available bandwidth, automatically adjust network throughput, and provide differentiated service acceleration. HTR significantly improves effective E2E transmission bandwidth and minimizes the negative impact of packet loss and delay on video service quality, providing operators with a competitive solution for MBB 2K and FBB 4K video service development. Demonstrating Huawei's leading role and innovation capabilities in the IP field, the HTR is a major breakthrough for ultra-HD video service backhaul.

Huawei’s HTR provides 400G capacity and will support smooth evolution to 1T/2T in the future, making it an effective solution for MBB 2K and FBB 4K service backhaul. It includes a unique Smart Service Acceleration Engine (SSAE) that incorporates three key technologies: network status sensing, packet loss identification and packet recovery, and delay compensation. [Infonetics]: DSC Market to Reach $1.3B by '18; Led by Huawei, F5 and Oracle


A new report by Diane Myers, Principal Analyst, Infonetics Research finds that ".. the Diameter signaling control market will grow threefold between 2014 and 2018, to $1.3 billion .. Globally, the Diameter signaling control market totaled $381 million in 2014, an increase of 81 percent over 2013.

Developed as the next-generation signaling protocol, Diameter has begun to permeate networks, driven by increasing LTE usage and the emergence of VoLTE (voice over LTE). As a result, the Diameter market spiked 81 percent in 2014 from the previous year.

[Infonetics]: "significant changes in the policy management vendor landscape"

 
A new survey by Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research, on the Policy management marker finds that:

"The next generation of policy management solutions has evolved to address the challenges associated with increased broadband consumption and a wider range of end-user devices. This shift has translated into significant changes in the policy management vendor landscape as suppliers look to refine and reposition their offerings .. There are new buyers for policy management within the operators and new requirements that policy solutions must address, and this has created challenges for many suppliers playing in the market -- a trend that we expect to continue in the coming years" 

Survey results: 
  •  respondents put Huawei at the top of the list; Ericsson came in second, and Openet and Oracle tied for third
     
  • Topping respondents' criteria for choosing a policy management solution are reliability and performance scalability
     
  • While only 13 percent of respondents are currently running policy management software as a virtual network function (VNF), 57 percent plan to do so by the end of 2016. A surprisingly high 32 percent of operators surveyed plan to deploy policy via a cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform by the end of 2016

[Analysys Mason]: S/W Professional Services Boosted due to OSS/BSS Transformations


A new report by Shanthi Ravindran, Senior Analyst, Glen Ragoonanan, Principal Analyst, and Gorkem Yigit, Research Analyst, Analysys Mason finds that "The worldwide market for telecoms software professional services (TSPS) was USD53.75 billion in 2013. 
  • The top-six suppliers (unchanged since 2011) accounted for 36.5% of the USD53.75 billion market in 2013
      
  • Many communications service providers (CSPs) deployed LTE networks and conducted OSS/BSS transformations for analytics and customer experience management (CEM) in 2013. This boosted vendors’ TSPS revenue because CSPs outsourced TSPS to reduce in-house tasks and costs
     
  • Nokia Networks dropped to sixth position because it terminated several unprofitable TSPS deals
      
  • Huawei moved up to third position thanks to winning managed services deals abandoned by Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia
     
  • Vendors (NEPs, ISVs and IT suppliers) benefited from CSPs using more commercial off-the-shelf solutions (COTS) than systems integration (SI) in transformation projects, which boosted product-related services revenue.

Huawei Enables SkyFire's Optimizer as a Cloud Service


Opera Software's Skyfire today announced a ".. strategic partnership with Huawei in which Skyfire’s Rocket Optimizer platform will be made available to mobile operators in Huawei’s Cloud Edge Virtual Multi-Service Engine (vMSE - see "Huawei Unveils Cloud Edge Solution for Breakthrough Services Agility with NFV" - here).
 

.. Over-the-top video and audio optimization represents a significant application of NFV. Demand for streaming content has grown exponentially in recent years, although its impact on networks can occur unpredictably in various locations at various times throughout the day. 

Mobile operators need the ability to bring up and take down resources for multiple locations throughout the day, which can be expensive if done inline at locations near the network edge. By virtualizing these network functions through Skyfire’s Rocket Optimizer, operators can expand capacity instantly to deliver a positive and cost-effective quality of experience for their subscribers".

[ABI]: VoLTE (w/IMS) is the Next Big Thing; $30B Market to 2019

   
A new report by Sabir Rafiq [pictured], research analyst, ABI Research finds that ".. as the first wave of LTE deployments achieve coverage, VoLTE is the next big thing. VoLTE runs on IMS, and the market will total over $US30 billion through 2019 as it becomes widespread. 

Leading infrastructure vendors such as Ericsson and Nokia are fully committed to VoLTE and IMS space and equip customers with this next wave in mobile broadband. Similarly, other vendors such as Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, and Cisco recognize the impact VoLTE and IMS will have on the market. These vendors are active in the VoLTE space by offering credible solutions in order to attract and retain customers ..  IMS mobile core revenue corresponds directly with the popularity of VoLTE”.

[Anaylsys Mason]: Ericsson and Amdocs Led the Telecom Software Market in 2013


A recent report by Glen Ragoonann and Justin Van Der Lande, Principle Analysts, Dean Ramsay, Analyst, and Mark H. Mortensen [pictured], Practice Head, BSS, Analysys Mason finds that "The value of the worldwide telecoms software market grew by 7.0% (or USD1.6 billion) between 2012 and 2013, from USD23.1 billion to USD24.8 billion. The overall market is still highly fragmented: the top-six suppliers accounted for just 48.6% of the market, and no supplier had a share of more than 12.0%."
  • Ericsson increased its leading market share position in 2013 as it continued to integrate the ConceptWave Software and Telcordia Technologies product lines into its OSS/BSS solution sets and expand its contracts with Tier 1 and 2 communications service provider (CSP) customer
     
  • Amdocs’ revenue growth was slightly below the market average and the rates achieved by the other top four vendors. However, it remained strong in revenue management and service fulfilment, and maintained its second-place position in the overall telecoms software market.
     
  • Strong growth in the network management system (NMS) and SDP segments has increased Huawei Technologies’ market share to 9.6%.
      
  • Oracle continued to increase its share, driven by the integration of its service fulfilment and BSS (notably Siebel CRM) products, and to capitalise on its strong brand in emerging markets. Oracle’s revenue is growing at a higher rate than any of the other top-six vendors.
     
  • Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia Solutions and Networks (NSN) both lost market share following another challenging year of flat revenue in a growing market. NSN’s loss is largely the result of the sale of its BSS unit to Redknee.
