CellMining Raises $5M to Further Develop SON


Another Israeli startup in the fast growing SON space (see "SON Market to Reach $4B (2017)" - here) raises funds  (see "Cellwize Secures $24.5M to Boost its SON Solutions" - here) following  the success of Intucell ("Cisco to Acquire SON Vendor Intucell; $475M" - here)

CellMining announced that it has" successfully closed a Series A funding round with a total value of $5 million, led by Lazarus Israel Opportunities Fund. This investment will help fund the Company as it further develops its pioneering subscriber-centric mobile network optimization capabilities, and will help it to expand into new markets. 


CellMining’s Behavior-Based SON™ solution analyzes the subscriber network experience in a unique way, identifying usage patterns to optimize network performance based on Customer Experience Management (CEM) metrics. This goes far beyond the capabilities of existing SON technologies, which offer mobile network operators (MNO) only limited ability to understand, measure and improve their subscriber experience"

Cellwize Secures $24.5M to Boost its SON Solutions

   
I covered the Israeli startup, Cellwize, a number of times last year - which is unusual for such young company:
  • The product (see "Cellwize Launches NFV Based, "pay-as-you-grow", SON" - here) and,
     
  • Impressive deployments by large MNOs (Cellcom, Israel on Sep. '14 and Telefocina, UK on Oct. '14).
It seems that these winnings and the promising market (see "SON Market to Reach $4B (2017)" - here) led to an impressive funding round of $24,5M in equity and credit.

The company announced it has "..raised $14.5 million in a Series A funding round led by Carmel Ventures and Vintage Investment Partners. In addition, Viola Credit (formerly Plenus) granted a $10 million credit facility to Cellwize. The funding will be used to boost Cellwize’s innovative SON customer-centric optimization capabilities and to expand its market presence including a planned significant increase in its workforce.
  
Already in operation for over two years, Cellwize optimization solutions are implemented in some of the world’s leading mobile operators serving over 300 million subscribers".

SON Market to Reach $4B (2017); Converges with DPI and Analytics


A new report by Research and Markets finds that "Despite challenges relating to implementation complexities and multi-vendor interoperability, SON revenue is expected to grow to more than $4 Billion by the end of 2017, exceeding conventional mobile network optimization revenue by nearly 60%. .. Amid growing demands for mobile broadband connectivity, mobile operators are keen to capitalize on SON to minimize roll-out delays and operational expenditures associated with their ongoing LTE and HetNet deployments.

Originally targeted for the RAN (Radio Access Network) segment of mobile networks, SON technology is now also utilized in the mobile core and transport network segments. Furthermore, the SON ecosystem is increasingly witnessing convergence with other technological innovations such as Big Data, predictive analytics and DPI (Deep Packet Inspection).

Nokia Integrates its Former and Acquired SON Solutions


Nokia Networks announced "Nokia Eden-NET combines the best Self Organizing Networks (SON) functionality from the now-completed Eden Rock acquisition and Nokia Networks iSON Manager in one solution .. The new solution is based on both Eden Rock’s Eden-NET and Nokia Networks iSON Manager.

According to Infonetics, SON and optimization software market forecast October 2014 report [here], The size of the optimization and SON market is expected to exceed 5 bn Euros globally by 2018".

Amdocs Integrates RAN Management and Optimization Solutions


Amdocs announced an ".. integrated solution to optimize multi-vendor, multi-technology, heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Warren Buffett Leads $22M Investment to Convert Network Intelligence into Power Saving


eVolution Networks announced that "Berkshire Hathaway Energy subsidiary IES Holding, and GE Ventures have invested $22.5 million in eVolution Networks.

eVolution Networks' Smart Energy Solution is a software-based solution that analyzes the mobile network's traffic needs and adjusts the use of the network's resources based on real-time demand from subscribers. This adaptive and unique approach to managing the network's resources has been deployed by Tier-1 operators such as Telefonica Group and has proven to save millions of dollars annually on energy bills".


Digicel Jamaica deployed eVolution Smart Energy Solution in 2013 (here). In 2014 it was selected as Telefonica Group's global partner for RAN energy saving (here).

eVolution Networks' technology includes Radio Coverage Analysis and Traffic Analysis & Prediction that feed the ePlatform that eventually deactivates base stations reducing operators’ energy consumption by up to 35% annually.

Nokia and Coriant Extend SON to Mobile Backhaul


Nokia Networks and Coriant announced that they are "first to extend intelligent self-organizing networks (SON) to mobile backhaul .. The SON for mobile backhaul Proof of Concept shows how advanced analytics and software defined networking (SDN) work together to create programmable, self-aware networks that assure an optimal service experience end-to-end. The same level of experience can be achieved with 20% less transport infrastructure than is needed in today’s networks.

The self-aware network extends SDN beyond automated service provisioning to automatically reconfigure network resources based on analysis of the factors that impact customer experience and service level agreements. By reversing the conventional paradigm – in which services must conform to the network – SON adapts the mobile backhaul network to the demands of mobile services. This results in a better perceived Quality of Experience because high service quality is maintained every time a user runs an application"

SON Deployments [331]: Vodafone Hutchison [Australia] Uses Amdocs


Amdocs announced that "..Vodafone Hutchison Australia has deployed Amdocs Self-Optimizing Networks (SON) solution [see "Amdocs Acquires Celcite for $129M; 2014 Expected Revenues (w/Actix):$68-103M" - here and "Amdocs Positions Actix/Celcite as its SON Solution" - here] to help with the program to improve its 4G coverage and customer experience across Australia. The solution helps Vodafone to free up 850 MHz spectrum previously used for 3G, so that it can be used for LTE. The 850 MHz spectrum is the most widely supported low-band spectrum currently supported by 4G smartphones and tablets, and provides a superior customer experience with fewer dropped data sessions.

SON Deployments [324]: Telefonica [UK] Deployed Cellwize


Cellwize announced that its "elastic-SON™, the Centralized Self Organizing Network solution (C-SON) has been commercially deployed by Telefónica UK to enhance mobile network performance and Quality of Service for UK subscribers. elastic-SON from Cellwize was selected following a rigorous evaluation process carried out by the Telefónica Global CTO Team and Telefónica UK.

SON Deployments [279]: SingTel Deploys Ericsson; "20% Faster Internet"


Ericsson announced that "SingTel has chosen Ericsson's SON Optimization Manager to extend benefits of network automation to their WCDMA networks. The solution adapts intelligently to network traffic conditions, delivering optimum coverage, capacity and quality at all times .. With this system, SingTel and Ericsson optimize multiple network elements and domains, allowing the integration of multiple technologies 2G, 3G and 4G into a single optimization model".

SingTel itself announced that "mobile customers can look forward to faster and more consistent data speeds in crowded locations as SingTel implements a range of groundbreaking network capacity enhancements. The enhancements, which include the Self Organising Networks (SON) solution and small cells technology are being progressively rolled-out in busy locations such as shopping malls, event and concert venues, and selected commercial and residential buildings" (see "SingTel boosts mobile data speeds and network capacity in crowded locations" - here).

Amdocs Acquires Celcite for $129M; 2014 Expected Revenues (w/Actix):$68-103M

   
Amdocs continues to expand its offering in the network optimization space - much close to the IP data plane compared to its legacy products.

The BSS/OSS vendor announced ".. it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all the assets of Celcite Management Solutions LLC [see "Celcite Updates SON with Responsibility Metrics and Accelerated Load Balancing" - here]  for approximately $129 million in cash .. Additional consideration may be paid later based on the achievement of certain performance metrics".

"The acquisition of Celcite builds upon and enhances the recent acquisition of Actix [see "Amdocs Acquires Actix ($120M) to Provide Geo-located Network Information" - here], and demonstrates Amdocs’ continued commitment to its network software and services strategy. By combining Actix’s market leading products with Celcite’s comprehensive network management and Self Optimizing Networks (SON) services and offering capabilities, Amdocs will be able to offer service providers comprehensive equipment-agnostic optimization solutions".

During its Q4 2013 earning call, Amdocs CEO Eli Gelman [pictured] said that "Combined, we expect Actix and Celcite to contribute between 2% to 3% of our full year revenue outlook in fiscal 2014 and drive modest earning accretions" (see "Amdocs Limited Management Discusses Q4 2013 Results - Earnings Call Transcript", by SeekingAlpha - here). Based on 2013 revenues of $3.3B and expected "organic growth outlook of roughly 2% to 5%" for 2014, this translates into $68-103M for both acquisitions.

Celcite Updates SON with Responsibility Metrics and Accelerated Load Balancing.


Celcite announced that is has ".. launched Celcite SON 3.5. This update introduces advanced new features unavailable elsewhere: 
  • With Responsibility Metrics, network engineers can, for the first time, quickly and easily ascertain which cells are proportionately most responsible for network problems. This means that Celcite’s self-optimizing network system can automatically prioritize and handle the issues that will deliver the biggest improvements in network capacity and customer experience – or allow engineers to do so themselves in an “open-loop” set-up.
     
  • Celcite SON 3.5 also introduces Accelerated Load Balancing (ALB), which rapidly finds and addresses abnormal load situations within the network. The accelerated response time means that the network can now be corrected within minutes, circumventing any issues that could multiply with slower responses to the problem. The ALB function is even more powerful with Celcite SON 3.5’s increased scalability and speed, as multiple instances can now be handled on the same processor". 
Celcite's Centralized SON (C-SON) product, provide SON support for all major equipment providers, including EricssonNSN, and Huawei, across both 3G and 4G".

[Guest post]: Preventing Conflict in Self-Optimizing Networks

Self-organizing networks (SON) address the challenges posed by increasingly complex mobile networks by automating the provisioning, configuration and reconfiguration of the radio access network (RAN) for optimal capacity and performance. The benefits are clear. Operators who have installed it have seen more than a 15 per cent improvement in capacity utilization and greater than 20 per cent improvement in the dropped call rate. However, like any powerful technology, it needs to be put in the right hands.

To explain the implications, we need to start at the beginning. There are two main types of SON, decentralized and centralized. Decentralized SON (D-SON) only applies to a single node and does not allow for any coordination between different infrastructure vendors' equipment.  With D-SON, because the SON process happens at a distributed level, its effects are very localized.  Nonetheless, that can set up conflicts with other instances of SON elsewhere on the network.  From experience, most operators that have installed some level of D-SON on their network soon realize that they need some level of centralized organization layer.  Because of those limitations and scope for conflict, there is even some concern that D-SON may already be a redundant technology. 

Centralized SON (C-SON), on the other hand, allows the whole network to be self-optimized because it is a conglomeration of multiple, smaller use cases that focus on solving a single problem across the whole network.  But even with C-SON, the vendor absolutely needs experience of live, in-network installations of SON or risk setting up conflicts in the operator network, which could potentially lead to making the network worse, not better.

There are two key functions required to prevent conflict in C-SON. These are the trigger function, which determines which use case to initiate based on specific symptoms, and the coordination function, which manages any conflicts on the outbound command path to the network. The coordination function plays a pivotal role in deciding which command should take precedence over another, and in which order they should be transmitted.

Without the coordination function in place, a worse-case scenario of “Runaway SON” could occur.  It would come about if a command gets into a never-ending loop between two cells, setting in motion a chain of events which can ultimately lead to network outages. For example, one bad command may create a condition on one cell that the SON system senses, and corrects it on that and subsequent cells. Then, the first SON system catches the “bad” condition on the “corrected” cells, amplifying a single mistake and catalyzing a chain reaction of errors.  While this is currently only a theoretical scenario, for SON vendors without in-network SON experience and years of network management experience, it is a potential reality.

Mobile operators are sometimes wary of autonomous systems because of the risk of such outages occurring without human involvement. But humans do not have to be completely left out of the picture, particularly at the early stages of an installation.  Operators can start by incorporating some human involvement into the command loop. This “open-loop” method allows for greater control of the SON system since live personnel can decide if a particular change to a cell should be pushed to the network or not, minimizing the risk of a command being incorrectly prioritized and causing network outages. Once the foundation of trust is built, human intervention can slowly be removed from the equation to enable a completely autonomous SON system, once real people have seen how effective the system is.

Operators that have installed an “open-loop” system have made the switch to fully autonomous in as little as four weeks in our experience.  This shows just how quickly operators can be convinced of the real-world benefits of SON when they see it in action.  If operators keep a skeptical eye on D-SON and do not rush to engage partners without live SON experience, there is no need for conflicts to ever become an issue.  Then finally, the positive impact of SON, and C-SON in particular, of improved customer experience and reduction in CAPEX and OPEX can be felt universally.

Cisco Integrates Acquired SON and Small Cell Technologies


Cisco announced it has "..opened an innovation center in Israel to develop and deploy a radio network topology for handling the surge in demand for mobile Internet services. Cisco is collaborating with Pelephone Communications Ltd., an Israeli telecom service provider, to test on its live production network the world's first self-optimizing heterogeneous configuration that combines small-cell, Wi-Fi and macro technologies.
