AdaptiveMobile Uses Big Date to Defend ISPs in Real-Time

AdaptiveMobile announced the "..launch of Tethra™, a Hadoop-based “Big-Security” threat analytics platform designed to defend service provider networks. Tethra provides powerful real-time continuous monitoring of threats, evaluating the billions of events occurring every day within the typical mobile and fixed line service provider. Unlike traditional approaches to network security, which rely on daily feeds to databases of signatures and categorisation decisions, Tethra™ is uniquely able to respond immediately to new threats as they emerge within the network".

$6M Parental Control Win for Allot in EMEA (with Partner)

URL filtering (or parental control) becomes popular recently. Procera Networks announced "Web Content Categorization & Filtering capabilities" (here) and today's announcement by Allot Communications shows the market potential.

Allot announced that it has been "awarded an approximately $6 million project from a Tier 1 operator which will be implemented in phases over several years ..  The project, awarded by a Tier-1 mobile operator in EMEA, highlights the importance mobile operators place on the cloud-based services which Allot’s product suite enable .. the comprehensive solution was built in collaboration with an Allot technology partner. Its capabilities include URL filtering based on website categories, real-time content filtering, file blocking, protocol and application filtering, multi-policy controls for age appropriate segmentation and online content inspection and filtering for uncategorized URLs".

Allot announced two partners for parental control: AdaptiveMobile (see "Allot Integrates with AdaptiveMobile Parental Control & Malware Protection" - here) and the more established relations with Optenet (see "Optenet and Allot Team on Integrated DPI/Parental Control" - here) with which it announced several joint projects already (Vodafone Turkey)

"The deployment focuses on the capabilities of Allot’s Service Gateway to identify traffic, in real-time, that belongs to subscribers registered for the Parental Control Service (based on the identification of the subscribers’ service plan). Allot Service Gateway steers the subscribers’ traffic to a virtualized Parental Control filter, which then screens the web pages for harmful or inappropriate content"

[Adaptive Mobile]: Survey Shows Parents will Pay for Mobile Child Protection VAS

A survey by AdaptiveMobile finds that "Parents want services from operators to safeguard their children online and would be willing to pay an additional £5 a month for protection against inappropriate content, sexting and cyberbullying .. two thirds (65%) of UK parents are concerned about their children’s safety on mobiles and with these devices frequently representing a ‘black hole’ for monitoring, these worries are well placed. Whereas desktop and laptop PCs are frequently used in the lounge or under parental supervision, smartphones can access the web anywhere, leaving parents struggling to control or monitor these channels".

"In total, operators could be missing out on £4 million of revenue per month providing such premium services but also enhancing parental control and loyalty".

DPI/Security Deployments [102]: MTN [Nigeria] Deployed AdaptiveMobile to Protect the Network

AdaptiveMobile (whom had recently partnered with Allot - here) announced that it has ".. successfully completed a mobile content filtering, anti-spam and anti-virus protection project with MTN Nigeria, enabling the operator to protect its network and subscribers from undesired mobile content through mobile handsets and mobile data-enabled PCs. The AdaptiveMobile Network Protection Platform is reducing network load, protecting the operator’s IP reputation from the growing threat of spam-related IP blacklisting and is reducing customer complaints"

"AdaptiveMobile’s Network Protection Platform provides network-based protection across a range of service bearers and is enabling MTN to: Drastically cut spam, Remove MTN’s IP addresses from blacklists, Reduce customer care costs, Block access to illegal sites and Identify the source of viruses"

MTN Nigeria, part of the MNT group that operates in 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East, has over 40M subscribers.  The operators see a nice growth in its data revenues (see chart), from 3% of total revenues in 2009 to 5% in the first half of 2011.

Obinna Nweje (pictured), General Manager, MTN Nigeria said:. “As with many operators globally, the shared nature of mobile IP addresses means that attacks from unscrupulous spammers can have a huge impact on IP address reputation and potentially result in innocent subscribers’ emails being unnecessarily blocked

DPI/Security Announcements: Allot Integrates with AdaptiveMobile Parental Control & Malware Protection

Allot Communications and AdaptiveMobile announced today "a joint solution that is designed to enable operators to deliver Parental Control and Malware protection as a value-added subscriber service. The solution, based on Allot Service Gateway and AdaptiveMobile’s Network Protection Platform has already been selected by a Tier-1 operator in EMEA .. Intelligent policy-based steering ensures that security services are provided only to opted-in users, optimizing the operator's profitability and protection capabilities".

Gareth Maclachlan (pictured), COO, AdaptiveMobile said: “Parents are asking operators to deliver the most complete levels of protection within the network but with the flexibility to decide what is appropriate for their children. Our joint solution means that operators can now offer a differentiated service and monetize it.”

"With the AdaptiveMobile Network Protection Platform (NPP), an operator can support parental choice in providing mobile communications to children and teenagers yet allow the parent to have full control over how and when the services will be available.
  • Personalised Communication Manager: allows the parent to manage all text, voice, IM and other communications to and from their child; limiting who they can contact and the times when contact can be made, whilst ensuring that the parent or selected family members are always accessible

  • Content Manager: allows the parent to select the type of content a child can access, whether it is by Web, SMS, call or MMS. Not only are inappropriate websites and premium services blocked, the parent can ensure appropriate filter settings are applied at the top search engines, for example or block messages that contain inappropriate words or URL’s

  • Personalised Usage Manager: Analysis with our customers has shown that one of the busiest usage periods for children is between 10 and 11.30 pm where they are texting and browsing while parents believe their children are asleep. A parent can set their own timetables for permitted usage, including the volume of messages and calls that a child may make or receive; parents can even have the option of allowing more access for good behaviour, or implementing sanctions through a single webclick"
