VimpelCom - Free Access to Wikipedia

Here is another use for Procera's DPI equipment at VimpelCom (here), which could (or should) be using the recently announced Content Intelligence solution (here) for deeper DPI on HTTP (here).

The group and the Wikimedia Foundation announced a "partnership to deliver free Wikipedia access to VimpelCom customers. Through Wikipedia Zero, VimpelCom’s mobile customers will have free access to the mobile version of Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, along with a light-weight, text-only fast version of the site. Locally-relevant articles in local language versions of Wikipedia will be available along with the English version ..Wikipedia Zero will be rolled out in VimpelCom operations across the globe starting this year, with focus on emerging markets in Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa".

VimpelCom uses Procera's DPI equipment (here).

DPI Deployments [195]: Mapping of Russian ISPs

A story by Andrei Soldatov and Irina Borogan (both pictured) to Wired covers, among other things, DPI deployments by the leading Russian ISPs:

We got our first client in 2004, it was Transtelecom. But it was its security department, so DPI was intended for its internal network,” said Roman Ferster, CEO of RGRCom company, the main distributor of Allot DPI technologies in Russia .. They helped install Allot devices in the Tatarstan region, in the Far East, in VimpelCom’s ISP network in Moscow, in the Ural regional operator’s network, and so on .. Ferster’s company also offers Russia technology that can solve the technical problem of blocking a single video clip instead of YouTube as a whole".

".. DPI did not really arrive in Russia until the end of the 2000s, and now many of the biggest DPI technology vendors have a presence in Russia: Canada’s Sandvine, Israel’s Allot, America’s Cisco and Procera, and China’s Huawei".

"By the summer of 2012, all three national mobile operators in Russia already had DPI at their disposal: Procera was installed in VimpelCom [here], while Huawei’s DPI solutions are in use in Megafon [here], and MTS bought CISCO DPI technology".

"The ISPs turned out to be more hesitant in adopting DPI technologies. All the engineers we have interviewed, who deal with DPI in Russia, told us that most ISPs do not understand why they need to install this technology"

DPI Deployments [176]: Vimpelcom [Russia] Deployed Procera to Manage P2P Traffic

While this is a 2011 project, one can still appropriate the willingness of the customer to be quoted by name after implementing a bandwidth management solution, used to "optimize" P2P file sharing traffic.

Procera Networks announced that VimpelCom "..  has deployed Procera’s PacketLogic platforms in nearly 43 cities throughout Russia. Last year, VimpelCom purchased Procera’s Intelligent Policy Enforcement (IPE) solutions to provide network visibility, analytics, optimization and bandwidth management. Most of the corresponding revenue was recognized by Procera last year"

Vimpelcom - Russia

"..[Vimpelcom] implemented a number of Procera’s IPE platforms and PacketLogic Intelligence Center (PIC) solutions including several PL10000 series platforms, PL 8000s, and PICs plus bypass switches for additional network resilience and availability".

"VimpelCom, in conjunction with technology system integrator Jet Infosystems, performed operational and laboratory testing using Procera’s PacketLogic Intelligence Center (PIC) solutions to gain “live” traffic analytics for their extensive network, and found that over 50% of broadband resources were being consumed by peer-to-peer file sharing. The two companies used the results of this research to design a solution that specifically meets VimpelCom’s unique requirements".

VimpelCom and Symantec Corporation recently announced ".. the offering of new Child Safety service, an integrated network-based online security service, which combines internet filtering, internet surfing reports, and network-use time control .. this service is already available via VimpelCom’s network in Russia under the Beeline brand (total of 4.6M broadband subscribers, see chart below)".

Vimplecom, Russia  - Q4, 2011
".. The Child Safety service blocks the malicious and inappropriate online content from the users that are configured to not receive such content. This service enables parents to define and execute policy-based controls for children of various age groups, such as under 7, 7-12 and over 13 years of age. The solution also automatically categorizes new frequently visited web sites and adds those to the existing category database. Access to search engines and encyclopedias can be left open to all age groups, however, search results can be filtered-out for restricted and inappropriate content"

"The solution uses a website categorization database, provided by RuleSpace (since October 2010 a subsidiary of Symantec), a recognized global leader in parental control services; URL filtering, safe search, context advertising, and content audit
