Flash & Nokia Expand Partnership
A 2nd agreement for Flash Networks with Nokia Networks. 4 months after announcing that "Nokia will Include Flash Network Gateway in its Offering" (here), the two companies signed an MOU for Flash's other business line - monetization
Flash announced that it has "signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nokia Networks to provide Flash Networks’ Layer8 monetization solution to mobile carriers worldwide. Nokia Networks will extend its portfolio with the Layer8 solution in 2015. This mobile monetization solution has already been selected by seven Tier 1 mobile operators around the world (see "Flash Networks' Monetization Selected by 7 Operators; Defines "With the Top" Model" - here) and is currently being deployed for 50 million users with a growth potential of reaching up to 200 million subscribers in 2015.
Flash Networks and Nokia Networks will not only act as the technology providers but will also manage the entire lifecycle of Layer8, including the creation of a complete ecosystem. The ecosystem, which already includes over 200 partners, will enable operators to offer use cases such as local content recommendation, coupons, price comparisons, app recommendations, the upsell of data packages, and much more. This enhanced offering adds new value to the user experience in a clientless and non-intrusive way. The cooperation will be underpinned by co-marketing and sales activities, building on and increasing the collaboration that already exists between the two companies in the optimization domain.

Flash Networks' Monetization Selected by 7 Operators; Defines "With the Top" Model
Flash Networks announced that its "Layer8 clientless monetization solution was selected by seven operators in the last six months and is planned to be used by over 200 million subscribers worldwide. The latest customers include operators in Asia and Europe and one large operator group which plans to deploy at several properties.
Layer8 is a clientless monetization solution that reinvents the way operators engage with their subscriber base and enables mobile operators to join forces with over-the-top (OTT) players instead of competing with them".
Using this approach, we are creating an entirely new market segment – with-the-top (WTT) – where operators and OTT players cooperate rather than compete.
From now on we no longer want operators to think in OTT terms but rather consider themselves part of the WTT ecosystem. As part of this ecosystem, we have already partnered with over 200 content providers across the globe, enabling Layer8 to be used by operators to reach out and offer relevant content directly to their subscribers in an appealing way.”

Flash Networks Optimizes MPEG-DASH with 30%-50% Data Reduction
| Source: DASH Industry Forum |
Today a significant amount of YouTube traffic is delivered using the MPEG-DASH format. YouTube has implemented a unique flavor of MPEG-DASH that requires more sophisticated methods of optimization than standard MPEG-DASH. Optimization solutions that do not support MPEG–DASH are unable to positively influence the delivery of video with this format and therefore are less efficient overall.
Flash Networks, by using proprietary methods, provides an advanced MPEG-DASH optimization solution, enabling mobile operators to provide a more consistent, higher quality of experience to its subscribers".

4th of July Celebration for Instagram
Analysis made by Flash Networks from its installed customer base of mobile operators (serving 30M smartphone users in North America, during the last week of July) found that "Instagram video viewing exceeded YouTube on the fourth of July, America’s independence day, reaching close to 28% percent of total video hits. .. Surprisingly, in comparison with Instagram’s sharp spike, YouTube video hits slightly decreased that day and Vine’s video hits stayed relatively flat .. Google’s YouTube is still clearly the most popular video service, and continues to maintain its superiority in the total volume of mobile video traffic. However, Facebook’s Instagram has demonstrated that it can generate usage rivaling YouTube by being the application of choice for capturing and sharing holiday celebrations".

Oracle Next Acquisition: DPI? Optimization? SDN?
- DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) - this is an important capability that can enhance the Oracle charging solution set. Players such as Allot Communications (which maintained a relationship with Tekelec to enhance the latter's PCRF product in accounts such as Orange, Verizon and Vodafone) and Procera Networks (which partnered with Tekelec in some accounts such as Comcast) can be distinct possibilities.
[Should I remind Sandvine to a Canadian]
- Video optimization current standalone vendors include Flash Networks and Vantrix
- SDN (Software Defined Networking) vendor [one must follow the trend, I guess]"
The DPI market is at least 5 times bigger that the video optimization market, that seems to be declining (see "Is the Optimization Market Declining?" - here). It is also big enough (over $500M, with expected growth of 20-30%) to generate interest by large vendors such as Oracle.
Shira Levin of Infonetics Research bets on DPI.

[Guest Post]: How to Engage Hidden Subscribers
By Merav Bahat*, VP Marketing & Business Development, Flash Networks
Bringing anonymous subscribers into plain view to build customer loyalty
They seem unreachable. Those prepaid users that buy a SIM card in a kiosk, leaving behind no trace of identity, preventing any future engagement around recharging, data packages and other products and services. These anonymous smart phone users are a frustration for marketing teams at operators. Indications are the problem will only get worse. Prepaid business for smart phones increased by 91 percent in the second quarter compared with the same period last year in the U.S, according to research firm NPD Group.
But this is just the beginning of the problem. If you add to prepaid users, users that can't be reached by bundled carrier app stores or software (iPhones, especially!) there are a huge number of subscribers who are out of reach from their operators. Where does this leave the marketers who are trying to engage with them?
Many respond with a “scattergun” approach – running massive campaigns in the hope that some customers will respond and make a purchase. However, this method usually results in low response rates and the offers are often perceived as intrusive, which can backfire with a negative brand association. Alternatively operators can create user profiles based on how often they recharge or where they recharge which is something to begin with, but it really is not enough to do effective mobile marketing.
With a new user engagement layer, operators can perform a more detailed analysis of prepaid likes and dislikes based on browsing patterns to determine which offers make the most sense and are most likely to be favorably received. Collecting user data including applications, devices, operating systems, and browsing patterns make prepaid users just as accessible as postpaid. This same solution can also unveil i-phone users, which can be hidden from mobile operators when purchased by third parties. With a new user engagement platform, providing the right message to the right person at the right time, operators can improve results dramatically. Compared with text campaigns, in-browser engagement can ensure delivery, more visibility, allow for multiple actions, and provide better measurements for success. This article will describe the technology behind the user engagement layer, including impact on user quality of experience and examples of how access to more subscribers can provide more revenue generating opportunities for operators.
