About Mobile Video Optimization Market Size and Citrix

A recent report by ABI Research (here) forecasts that ".. the mobile portion of the policy server (PCRF), DPI, and web/video optimization market as a collective whole reach $1.4 billion in 2012 and will grow to $2 billion by end 2013. Of this, more than 70% of the market is standalone DPI and policy server related", resulting in a $600M market for web/video optimization in 2013.

As many consider Bytemobile (acquired by Citrix earlier this year) as the leading vendor of standalone optimization solutions for MNOs, it was interesting to read the statement made by Citrix CFO, David James Henshall (pictured), during Q3 2012 analysts call, answering a question on the revenues expected from acquisitions next year:

"And while we haven't called out the individual components, I think Byte as a standalone should be at least $50 million of revenue. I mean, it's a really interesting market, addressing the cellular networks and the explosive growth that you're seeing right now across just, call it consumerization, but it's largely in video multimedia traffic across these networks. And so the number is still in process as we work through our 2013 plans, and I'll get more specificity after the end of this quarter. At a high level, that's how I think about it".

Note that Bytemobile's solution has also other features, such as DPI (see "Bytemobile Launches Integrated DPI, Caching, Optimization and NI Solution" - here). Citrix' recent report (here), states regarding Bytemobile's acquisition "The total consideration for this transaction was approximately $400.7 million, net of $5.6 million of cash acquired, and was paid in cash" (previously Citrix said it was $435M, and expected $15M revenues during Q4 2012 - here).
