[Update19 - Cisco Update] PCRF - DPI Compatibility Matrix

The compatibility table is updated now with Cisco's "Policy and Charging Control" - (here - formerly a Starent product).

"A TCO analysis conducted by Network Strategy Partners (PDF - here) showed that with the integrated functionality on Cisco's ASR 5000 multimedia core platform (mobile gateway, deep packet inspection, inline services), operators can achieve operational savings of 30 to 40 percent over leading competitive offerings with multiple-box solutions. They can rapidly deploy a wide variety of standard services or new services to improve the quality of experience for their subscribers and generate additional revenue. Operators also have investment protection with a solution that supports both 2.5G and 3G applications today and requires only a software upgrade to support 4G."

Still, we see that Cisco is partnering or being deployed with 3rd parties PCRFs (Openet, Broadhop, Bridgewater, Comptel).

  1. Hello,
please be aware that the PCRF - DPI compatibility matrix must be corrected to reflect the actual status of the IOT performed with Nokia Siemens Networks's Policy Control Solution, commercially available in the market with product name PCS-5000.
IOTs have been performed between PCS-5000 and DPI from Cisco, Sandvine and Allot.
    Thanks for updating the table.

  2. A PCRF is not same a Policy Manager or Policy Controller. PCRF must comply to 3GPP specs and support Rx and Gx reference points which maybe of 3-4 of the listed "PCRF" supports.
In addition, although a PCEF may contain a DPI, a DPI is not a PCEF and none of DPI you mentioned can act as PCEF and communicate with a PCRF, they all have proprietary APIs and do not support Gx reference point.
