[IDC]:"CSPs must find ways to generate more revenue throughout the video value chain"

A new report by Debra Osswald (pictured), Research Vice President of Communications Service Provider Operations, IDC (sponsored by Allot Communications), finds that "As over-the-top (OTT) and online video offerings evolve and diversify, mobile operators must compete based on the perceived quality of their broadband offerings, as well as on their ability to offer relevant services to both consumers and content providers". The report "examines the role that video optimization, caching, and analytics play in enhancing quality of experience (QoE) while alleviating bandwidth costs and enabling differentiated service offerings.
  • Video Optimization directly addresses issues relating to both quality of experience and bandwidth utilization

  • Video caching plays an additional role in this opportunity. It stores content on the edge of the network, as shown in Figure 1, and uses logical assessments of content usage and popularity to improve and optimize which content is stored there".

[IDC]:"Volumetric attacks will remain the predominant type of DDoS attacks"

With the recent "biggest DDoS attack ever" that "slowed down the Internet" (here) it comes with no surprise that a new report by Christian A, Christiansen (pictured), VP Security Products & Services research, IDC finds that "In 2012, there was a sharp increase in the frequency, bandwidth volume, and applications orientation of these attacks. As these attacks surged in prevalence and sophistication, organizations were often caught unaware. Embedded capabilities were quickly overwhelmed and outages were readily apparent on the Web. This is driving the need for proactive solutions to protect customer's infrastructure from current and future attacks"

".. the worldwide market for DDoS prevention solutions (including products and services) will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.2% from 2012 through 2017 and reach $870 million".

According to John Grady (pictured), Research Manager Security Products program, IDC: "Volumetric attacks will remain the predominant type of DDoS attacks throughout the forecast period .. A defense-in-depth posture with a combination of on-premise equipment and cloud-based mitigation provides the best protection against advanced application and SSL-based attacks as well as large-scale volumetric attacks".

[IDC]: "Fixed and mobile operators will have to deal with a new reality"

A new research by Matt Davis (pictured), Program Director, IDC finds that "Internet-generated broadband traffic will increase approximately 50% year over year on fixed networks and double on mobile networks .. fixed and mobile traffic volumes are driven by power users that are gorging themselves on a disproportionate amount of bandwidth, a practice that has some network administrators reaching for the Pepto-Bismol .. Web browsing, peer-to-peer file sharing, audio/video streaming, and a host of other applications are all driving bandwidth consumption .. HD video content will drive a new level of bandwidth demand, with more than 50% of video and audio streaming destined for a connected TV (either directly or indirectly), an iPad, or another mobile device or tablet".

"Fixed and mobile operators will have to deal with a new reality that will tax network resources to the limit —and perhaps past the limit".

IDC: By 2015 Number of Mobile Internet Users will Exceed Wireline Users

IDC market model forecasts that ".. By 2015, more U.S. Internet users will access the Internet through mobile devices than through PCs or other wireline devices. As smartphones begin to outsell simpler feature phones, and as media tablet sales explode, the number of mobile Internet users will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.6% between 2010 and 2015.  Worldwide, the total number of Internet user will grow from 2 billion in 2010 to 2.7 billion in 2015, when 40% of the world's population will have access to its vast resources"

Karsten Weide (pictured), research VP Media and Entertainment, said: "Forget what we have taken for granted on how consumers use the Internet. Soon, more users will access the Web using mobile devices than using PCs, and it's going to make the Internet a very different place"

IDC: 30 Million US Mobile Broadband Users by 2014

IDC predicts that "the U.S. mobile broadband market will grow from 6.5 million subscribers in 2009 to 30.2 million in 2014, which accounts for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 36.1% over the forecast period.

See "IDC Says Market for U.S. Mobile Broadband About to Speed Uphere and "U.S. Mobile Broadband 2010–2014 Forecast: Consumers Join Business Users to Spur Growth" - here.

"Mobile broadband is growing in importance for both consumers adopting the service and the operators offering connectivity," says Carrie MacGillivray, program manager, Mobility Services. "Diversity in pricing plans, new computing devices capable of mobile broadband connections, and the promise of a 4G world with faster speeds are a tempting proposition for customers looking to be ubiquitously connected regardless of location, anytime."

Hopefully, the US mobile operators will be able to offer enough capacity and/or traffic management control in order to cope with the expected growth of over 360% in 4 years (see more below).
