ATIS - Net Neutrality Compliant Network Optimization Use Cases

      

A recent presentation of ATIS' Network Optimization Focus Group (led by Alcatel-Lucent and Juniper), lists 7 use cases for network optimization:

• Congestion‐aware Fairness
• Subscriber / Application Aware Network Optimization
• Network Aware Scheduling of Content
• User Rate Plans
• Reasonable Network Protection and Management
• Load and Policy Aware Multi‐RAN Selection
• Optimizing Use of Wireless Non‐Bearer Resources‐aware Fairness

These "Scenarios address Quality of Experience improvements as well as cost savings and revenue opportunities" and "consider the current net neutrality rules".

The group has also identified "A number of critical enhancements identified as areas for further standardization"

ATIS Released the CDN Interconnection Document (free until Sept. 30)

    

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) new "CDN Interconnection Use Case Specification and High Level Requirements" standards document (see previous post - here) has been released.   

"The standard enables CDN interconnection (CDN-I) by providing for common interfaces between providers’ operations systems, back office interfaces, routing equipment, and network interconnections. The CSF’s end-to-end process perspective is designed specifically to improve the efficiency and quality of service delivery to end users. Completed in only three months, this effort demonstrates ATIS’ rapid response to evolving carrier needs and delivers inter-carrier solutions essential to broad adoption of cloud services".

Active participants list include: Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, BT, CenturyLink, Cisco Systems, Ericsson, Fujitsu,  Huawei, Juniper, Microsoft, Neustar, Nokia Siemens Networks, Symmetricom, Telcordia, Verizon and ZTE USA.

ATIS Develops OTT Video Delivery Standards (eliminating CDN providers?)

   

Carol Wilson reports to Light Reading that "the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) Carrier Cloud Forum is preparing to publish a set of requirements that enable ISPs to deliver over-the-top (OTT) Internet video traffic more efficiently, using local interconnections .. The new Content Delivery Network (CDN) interconnect requirements and use cases will be published within the next week or two, only a little more than three months after the ATIS CCF  began meeting".

"Today, a request from a consumer on one carrier network seeking to view video content hosted on another carrier network consumes bandwidth on the networks of both, plus at a peering point. The new CDN interconnection [here] standards will enable the video-hosting ISP to recognize a request for video and allow it to be delivered via a CDN location that is closer to the consumer, and potentially even locally sited, to reduce core and backhaul network consumption"

So - what is the idea here? Replace the CDN providers (Level3/Akamai) with carrier CDN and direct n:m relations between ISPs? Please help me understand!

ATIS - Creating a Common Policy Management Framework

   

ATIS had a webinar last week on "Policy Management Standards - Toward a Common Architecture Framework".

The presentation is available here. It describers the process of creating a common policy framework, for all networks, users and applications led by ALU, AT&T, Cisco, Genband, HP, Huawei, Juniper, NSN, Nortel, Qwest, Telcordia and Verizon.

It is use-case driven, and based on 3GPP Policy and Charging Control architecture. The report mentioned in the slide below is available here.

The Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) announced it has completed a study of the issues associated with the industry’s fragmented approach towards Policy Management.

The Policy Management Focus Group was chaired by GENBAND’s CTO, Fred Kemmerer, and was comprised of the following companies: Alcatel Lucent, AT&T, Cisco, GENBAND, HP, Huawei, Juniper, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, Qwest and Verizon.

“Policy Management is emerging as a key enabler to enhance the network with functionalities like DPI and QoS” said Fred Kemmerer. “Going forward, GENBAND believes that Policy Management functions will act as a key differentiator, and play an important role in the industry’s competitive environment.”

A webinar, “Policy Management - Toward a Common Architecture Framework”  (here) is scheduled for September 30th - featuring  panelists: Naseem Khan, Principal Member of the Technical Staff, Verizon, and Fred Kemmerer.
