Exinda Enhances Wan Optimization w/DPI, Diagnostics, Shaping, Acceleration


Exinda announced the release of their "WAN Application Performance Solution ExOS 7.4. With improved diagnostics, shaping and acceleration techniques, this new release will help network administrators guarantee business critical applications perform as promised for all users across the extended enterprise.

.. ExOS 7.4 also enhances Exinda’s application classification engine with new and enhanced application signatures and improved Layer 7 application identification for reporting and policy creation of all traffic in your network. These enhancements include:
  • New and updated VoIP
  • real-time and conferencing applications
  • better control of recreational traffic with enriched BitTorrent detection. 
  • the new Google protocol QUIC
Kevin Suitor [pictured], VP of Product Management, Exinda said. “.. this is the first release in a series of releases that will focus on improving acceleration and control of each of the key Microsoft protocols with a goal of creating an Office 365 Solution Pack in 2016.”

Gartner's WAN Optimization Report


Gartner has updated its "Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization" (see chart below, courtesy of SilverPeak).

SilverPeak announced that "Gartner has named Silver Peak a Magic Quadrant Leader. Be among the first to see the latest report by completing the form on the right. According to Gartner, as WAN optimization appliances increasingly include WAN path control and local link load balancing capabilities, these products are morphing into SD-WAN solutions".

Gartner's report also indicates that "When WAN access bandwidth is adequate, WAN optimization can also be delivered as a network-based "WAN optimization as a service" (WOaaS), such as those from Aryaka [see "Arayka Launches Usage-based, Optimized WAN Connectivity Service" - here] and NTT Communications. WOaaS services are delivered from service delivery points embedded in carrier service infrastructure and enable enterprises to avoid the need to deploy on-premises physical appliances".

Cisco's New WAE Enables SP's Application-Aware WAN Services

 
Cisco announced it has added "..Cisco WAN Automation Engine(WAE) to its Evolved Services Platform (ESP), marking another key milestone in the company’s network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined-networking (SDN) strategy. These new capabilities will provide service providers with tools they need to analyze, visualize and control functions across multi-vendor, wide area networks (WAN)"

Cisco added quotes from Tencent, Italtel, TDS (Sandvine customer - here) , XO Communications and Wow! to the release, about the use of WAE or its predecessor, MATE.



Technology Highlights:
  • Situational and Predictive Analysis: Uses historical traffic data and anticipated demand to produce real-time and predictive models that increase overall service velocity; calculates high traffic “what-if” analysis while offering solutions for ultimate load balancing; utilizes flexible policy routing to enforce latency and utilization constraints for overall network optimization.
     
  • Traffic Visualization: Enables an accurate “total WAN” topology view with comprehensive modeling; collects and models traffic, equipment and topology data while maintaining the “state” of each and then maps everything together for holistic, real-time network transparency; utilizes time-sequenced global models to provide accurate forecasting across thousands of WAN nodes.
     
  • Control and Automated Provisioning: Extends Cisco ESP advanced orchestration and management across the WAN and dynamically assesses total traffic views to allow on-the-fly WAN reconfiguration of path calculations.

tw telecom Launches Dynamic Application Prioritization over VPN Service

 
tw telecom announced an ".. industry first capability that gives users the ability to control network class of service implementations on demand, in real time, dynamically across its IP VPN and managed services. These industry first capabilities allow customers to prioritize their applications according to rapidly changing business needs and immediately adjust network class of service priorities to meet those applications requirements.

The company's Dynamic Prioritization capability is a new feature of its Intelligent Network that frees users from outdated, static industry processes that force companies to pre-determine their application priorities and write service orders, waiting days or weeks before required changes are implemented.

[Gartner] Riverbed & Silver Peak are the WAN Optimization Leaders


Riverbed shared with us Gartner's Magic Quadrant for WAN Optimization - from a report by Joe Skorupa [pictured], VP Distinguished Analyst and Bjarne Munch, Principal Research Analyst, Gartner.

"Most networks carry a variety of traffic types of differing characteristics and importance. Many organizations are striving to manage this traffic to optimize the response times of critical applications and reduce costs, given that bandwidth continues to represent a significant proportion of operating expenditure for wide-area data networks. But the cost of bandwidth isn't the only consideration — as resources are increasingly centralized, minimizing the effect of latency on application response times is becoming a critical requirement. In addition, virtualization and new application environments, such as cloud computing and Web services as well as data replication, can put an unexpected strain on the WAN"



"The development of the application acceleration market has been driven by customer demand for highly integrated solutions that employ a wide range of techniques to optimize network traffic and that offer scalability and fault tolerance. Vendors in this space initially addressed either the traffic shaping/QoS market or the compression/caching market. These two segments have now largely merged, with most products supporting both sets of capabilities. Increasingly, the combination of application visibility/QoS and latency mitigation is required to achieve acceptable application performance. We therefore see a need for application identification/control and both generic and application-specific optimizations to mitigate the impact of network latency on remote application performance"

Arayka Launches Usage-based, Optimized WAN Connectivity Service

Aryaka announced " general availability of the world's first global enterprise Network OnDemand, which provides immediate access to private WAN connectivity and optimization, based on metered usage and pricing. The new provisioning option allows enterprises to scale their global presence and network usage without the traditional restrictions of MPLS or appliance-based networking and optimization solutions. Aryaka's customers can pay for just what they use beyond their subscription to accommodate temporary spikes in traffic, large and sporadic file transfers or disaster recovery and data replication".

BT WAN Optimization Service Saves 30% Using Ipanema

   
Ipanema Technologies announced that "Solvay, a global chemical company headquartered in Belgium with employees in 55 countries around the world, has been able, after a global WAN RFP in 2011, to reduce its telecom costs by 30% by dynamically controlling application performance over a hybrid network thanks to BT Connect Optimization, a BT managed service based on Ipanema Technologies’ solutions"

Following the sale of Solvay’s pharmaceutical division in 2009, employees and sites were reduced by 30%. In 2011 however, Solvay acquired Rhodia, which resulted in their employee base doubling from 15,000 to 30,000. 

The IT department was subsequently tasked with optimizing the Quality of Service (QoS) delivered for business applications while reducing telecom costs by 30%. 

They reached this goal by:

  • Using both the MPLS network and Internet resources as a single unified network to increase the Quality of Service delivered to end-users;
  • Moving business applications including Gmail, Google apps and SalesForce.com to the cloud with confidence that performance would not be affected;
  • Moving the telepresence dedicated network into a new multimedia network with confidence that performance would not be affected;
  • Increasingly using the Internet as a business network while keeping the MPLS network for bandwidth hungry applications such as SAP, VoIP and video only.

[Infonetics]: Wan Optimization Market Declining; Riverbed Dominates


A recent report by Cliff Grossner, Ph.D., directing analyst for data center and cloud, Infonetics Research, finds that "Though WAN optimization revenue increased 3% sequentially in 3Q13, to $210 million, it remains on an overall downhill course, with revenue falling 9% year-over-year this quarter. Future WAN optimization revenue will increasingly come from the replacement of existing gear rather than adoption by new customers or sites. As usual, Riverbed dominates the WAN optimization market, Cisco is firmly in 2nd place, and Blue Coat rounds out the top 3".

Riverbed Technology introduced ".. two new virtual editions to the Riverbed® Cascade® product family that enable managed service providers (MSPs) to deliver application-aware network performance management (NPM) as a service to their small-to-medium-sized and enterprise customers. The new Cascade Profiler Virtual Edition and Cascade Gateway Virtual Edition plus the existing Cascade Shark Virtual Edition provide a completely virtualized NPM solution portfolio that allows MSPs to deliver continued value in a virtualized world with the next-generation of performance management .. The new virtual edition products are expected to be generally available in Q4 2012"

Riverbed OEMs Vineyard's DPI Engine

  
Vineyard Networks announced that Riverbed Technology ".. has licensed Vineyard’s Network Application Visibility Library (NAVL) deep packet inspection (DPI) engine, designed to provide Riverbed® customers with comprehensive application classification technology to protect critical applications while containing recreational applications"

According to Vineyard, its DPI software is part of the recent enhancements to Riverbed's Steelhead (RiOS release 8.0) and the enhanced Layer 4-7 app classification capabilities in it. Riverbed now claims the ".. ability to scale automatic identification and prioritization to more than 600 applications" (see "Riverbed Introduces Software Enhancements and New High Performance Hardware Models to Steelhead Product Family" - here)

Vineyard partners' page (here) shows additional vendors as "powered by Vineyard" including BlueCoat.

Juniper Integrates Riverbed Technology for Mobile Acceleration


Juniper Networks announced a new technology partnership with Riverbed ".. in wide area network (WAN) optimization, application delivery and mobility to deliver market-leading technologies for enterprises looking to increase the efficiency of their IT infrastructures and securely deliver better performance of applications across devices, networks and clouds".
  
Among other things "Riverbed and Juniper will begin a joint effort to integrate Riverbed's Steelhead® Mobile technology into the Juniper Networks® Junos® Pulse client to provide a mobile acceleration solution for mobile phones and tablets". 
"With Steelhead® Mobile client software, companies of any size can give mobile workers LAN-like access to corporate files and applications no matter where they are in the world. [Infonetics]: Q1 Wan Optimization Revenues Down 20% QtQ

 
Sam Barnett (pictured), directing analyst for data center and cloud, Infonetics Research, recent market research of data center equipment shows that "The data center equipment market was down sequentially, but is up nicely from the year-ago first quarter .. Global revenue for data center network equipment—data center Ethernet switches, application delivery controllers, and WAN optimization appliances—fell to $2.2 billion in 1Q12, down 6% from 4Q11, but up a strong 17% year over year .. WAN optimization appliances saw the steepest revenue decline, down 20% from the previous quarter".

Research Shows the Need for Application-aware Networking


Telstra's "Application Assured Networking" (here and here) provides "organisations with a clear view and more control over the increasing number of financial, relationship management, IP telephony, video conferencing and other business applications on their network".

A new research, Killer Apps 2012, conducted by Ipanema Technologies and Easynet shows the potential demand for such technology, either as a service (Telstra's example, with Alcatel-Lucent equipment) or by deploying a Wan Optimization solution.

The research discovered that "performance problems are highly prevalent across networks, with 74% citing enterprise critical applications such as line of business (26%), ERP or CRM (26%) and video-based applications (22%) being those most at risk. In addition, the results unearthed a worrying trend on how such problems are discovered, with user complaints the second most common source of monitoring issues across networks".

In addition to the lack of visibility ("69% do not have visibility of the bandwidth requirements each network application requires"), there of course performance problems as well - "82% of respondents report speed and responsiveness problems in the past 12 months, 43% of companies highlighted that these issues are becoming ‘more frequent. The vast majority of companies (86%) report increasing bandwidth requirements"

DPI Announcements: Bluecoat Adds IPv6 Support and Increases Performance

    
Bluecoat announced "PacketShaper version 9, a new software operating system release for Blue Coat®PacketShaper® appliances that introduces the industry’s first [see comment below] network-, application- and content-level visibility and control for IPv6 “shadow networks” which have, up until now, run undetected on existing corporate IPv4 networks. In addition, the new software enables scalable performance of up to 8 Gigabits per second (Gbps) to meet increased network demands with more video and other rich media, large software downloads and other network application traffic".
   
".. Content is now widely available over IPv6 from providers such as Netflix, YouTube and via emerging Peer-2-Peer (P2P) applications. At the same time, many desktop and mobile endpoints, including tablets and mobile phones, are fully IPv6 ready .. PacketShaper version 9 adds IPv6 application and content visibility to the most powerful real time classification engine available today, with granular understanding of 700+ applications and tens of millions of Web sites categorized into 84 content categories.". 
   
The PacketShpaer product line is the former Packeteer (the DPI pioneer), product line. During the years, Packeteer and later Bluecoat focused on DPI based WAN Optimization solutions for enterprises, universities (where it competes with Allot and Procera - see a recent announcement "Procera Launches the PacketLogic™ PL7810" - here) and small ISPs, due to the limited performance compared to the other DPI players. Note that Procera announced already support for IPv6 (here).

Optimization Vendor Expand Goes into Urgent Assets Sale

    
Shmulik Shelah reports to Globes that a receiver has been assigned to Expand Networks, an Israeli vendor of optimization equipment for enterprise and satellite networks (see "Expand Networks Enables Rural Broadband with Satellite Optimization" - here), by Haifa District Court.

"Expand Networks investor Plenus Venture Lending Fund petitioned the court to appoint the receiver. Expand has been unable to repay its $10 million debt to Plenus, which was due two years ago. The appointment brings Expand Networks to an end, 13 years after it was founded, raised over $100 million, underwent several restructurings and strategic changes, and made numerous attempts to find a buyer".

"The receiver will now try to sell Expand Networks' assets. It currently has 100 employees, including 60 in Israel, but layoffs are likely within weeks, along with a change in management. Potential buyers include equipment vendors Cisco, Juniper Networks  and Riverbed, which will want to improve their position in the field, or internet optimization solutions provides, such as Akamai Technologies and Limelight Networks or even Israeli companies".
 
I doubt if Cisco, Juniper or Riverbed will be interested in buying Expand's assets, as they all have competitive products and Expand customer base is relatively small.

If anyone interested, the company's CEO, Elie Barr (pictured), was assigned to search a buyer.

Traffic Management Deployments (37): Telefonica [Brazil] Uses Allot for Managed Wan Optimization Service

      
Allot Communications announced today that "Telefonica Brazil has selected Allot as a partner in their “Smart” solution, a managed services offering targeted at enterprise customers.  Allot’s real time carrier-class monitoring, reporting and application management solutions play a strategic part in the optimization of the network.  By facilitating a comprehensive view into what is happening on their network, Allot’s solutions enable Telefonica’s customers to optimize their network for business critical applications".

Riverbed to Manage Traffic on Verizon's Managed WAN

   
In my "Broadband Traffic Management" blog, I usually cover consumer-generated traffic - i.e. services and applications we all know from our personal use, either over fixed or mobile networks.

Nevertheless, there is a huge market out there, with a very similar core technology, which targets the operator's business customers - enterprises that either inter-connect their branches and data centers or provide Internet access to their corporate users (or both).

Today we get an announcement from the leader in enterprise Wan Optimization market - RiverbedTheStreet reports (here) that "Networking specialist Riverbed(RVBD) is teaming up with Verizon(VZ) as part of a deal to boost traffic across corporate networks.". This is not new for Verizon, as it "already works with Cisco(CSCO) and Juniper(JNPR) to support its Managed WAN Optimization Services, but will now add Riverbed to this mix" - but certainly a great opportunity to Riverbed.

TheStreet also mentions that "ATT(T), BT(BT) and Orange Business Services were present at the virtual Steelhead launch, and Riverbed says that it is working with all three companies around managed services.". Orange Business Services is also using one of Riverbed's  comptitors - Ipanema Technologies - see  "App Performance Services from Vanco and Orange Business Services"  here.

The DPI Story – Part II – DPI for Traffic/Bandwidth Management

In my previous post I listed some of the solutions associated with DPI. Nevertheless, the most common use of DPI today is for traffic (or bandwidth) management, in public networks – usually serving residential subscribers.

The roots for these solutions take us back to the ‘90s, when enterprise class products for traffic management appeared. Used to be called QoS (Quality of Service), and later Wan Optimization solutions, these products allowed IT mangers to control how their Wan connections will behave.

Typically, Wan links (either private, VPN or Internet) were slow – just few Mbps – and overloaded during business hours. IT mangers wanted a simple way to tell the network which applications are critical, prioritize or guarantee their performance while slowing down other applications. The payback (ROI) was very quick – as bandwidth was expensive and the demand for bandwidth was always on the rise.

Around the turn of the century, broadband services became widely available to consumers at home and replaced the slow dialup connections. At the same time, new services started to emerge – and one of the most appealing service was music sharing/downloading (Napster was the first). Regardless of the question of the legality of copyrighted content sharing – these music downloads (and uploads) generated unprecedented load on ISPs uplinks and last-mile connections. It was quickly became clear that without control, any upgrade to the network will be 100% loaded, as more subscribers will just download and share more content.

Since enterprise Wan Optimization solutions were available, they found their way to the ISP market. They were required to do what they had done for enterprise networks – prioritize critical traffic (for example Web browsing) to provide the subscribers a good QoE (Quality of Experience) and slow-down other types of traffic (music download, later known as P2P applications), to avoid network upgrades (links and infrastructure). And so they did, and the ROI was great.

The early adaptors were usually smaller ISPs, serving a relatively small number of subscribers or operators in regions were bandwidth was extremely expensive or not available. P2P applications were still simple to detect, and the main need was for a simple-to-use appliance rather than the sophisticated DPI solution we see today. Enterprise class products were “good enough” to help these early adaptors.

During 10 years of deployment of bandwidth management solutions in ISP netwroks, the market has gone through a number of changes, resulting in with today’s solutions:
  • P2P file-sharing applications became very popular, and are used to download and upload music, video and other large files. During the years, the P2P applications (Emule, BitTorrent and others – collectively described as “bandwidth hungry” applications) consumed 60-70% of the internet capacity.
  • Detecting the bandwidth hungry applications became a major engineering challenge, as their creators found many ways to avoid control. A number of techniques had to be developed to identify these applications – creating the core of DPI.
  • The network capacity has grown in 3 orders of magnitude. DPI solutions today support throughput of 10s of Gbps vs. few 10s of Mbps
  • New applications, such as real-time voice and video-streaming appeared creating high expectations for QoE by the subscribers
  • Traffic management solutions are expected to be integrated with other network elements and services, such as subscriber management systems, policy management servers and others services elements. All together they should create a cost-effective and well-managed solution solving the service provider business needs.
As a result of the above trends and changes, Wan Optimization and DPI products and solutions are no longer the same. While the basic core technology may look the same, the differences are significant enough to expect separate product lines (and in most cases, vendors) for each market.
