EdgeCast Announced "Licensed CDN"; Deployed by Pacnet and AT&T(?)

 
EdgeCast Networks officially announced its " .. licensed CDN program. Following two years of success and traction within the carrier community, EdgeCast is the first CDN provider to successfully build a production CDN on behalf of a tier one telecommunications carrier .. The company has reached the General Acceptance milestone in its design, development, and deployment of a licensed CDN for a tier one U.S. telecommunications carrier. This comes just three months after EdgeCast signed a licensing agreement with Pacnet — one of Asia’s largest telecommunications carriers — to power Pacnet’s CDN service."

Earlier this year, EdgeCast and PeerApp announced a joint CDN and transparent cache solution (here). 

".. Two weeks ago, EdgeCast transferred control to the U.S. carrier of its own fully functional, high-performance CDN with more than a dozen points of presence across the U.S. The EdgeCast software covers the entire CDN stack: content delivery for caching and streaming; load balancing; network and server management; reporting; customer and account provisioning; technical support; and other back office functionality".

According to Rob Powell from Telecom Rumblings, the unnamed carrier is AT&T (see "EdgeCast Takes the Carrier Plunge" - here). AT&T is also using a CDN solution from Cotendo (here) that was recently acquired by Akamai (here).

Done, For $268M in Cash [Rumors: Akamai to Buy Cotendo for $300M]

  

Rumors (here) became reality - "Akamai Technologies  and Cotendo announced today that the two companies have signed a definitive agreement for Akamai to acquire Cotendo. .. Akamai will acquire all of the outstanding equity of Cotendo in exchange for a net cash payment of approximately $268 million , after expected purchase price adjustments, plus the assumption of outstanding unvested options to purchase Cotendo common stock".

Paul Sagan (pictured) president and CEO of Akamai said: "As we look to accelerate growth across the dynamic landscapes of cloud and mobile optimization .. Together, we believe there is tremendous opportunity for our combined technologies as enterprises embrace the move to the cloud and seek solutions for an increasingly mobile world"

Rumors: Akamai to Buy Cotendo for $300M

Asaf Gilad reports to Calcalist that 4 years old CDN startup Cotendo is about to be sold to Akamai, for $300M.No comment was received from Cotendo, and Akamai provided the expected response from a public company - "our policy is not to respond to rumors".

Cotendo (see "Cotendo's Cloudlet - Getting Closer to the Subscriber" - here), based in Israel, has 90 employees, and lists Google (see "Cotendo CEO: "We have a fertile technological dialogue with Google" - here), Facebook,  Microsoft and AOL among its customers.

In addition to a number of VC funds (here), Cotendo has Citrix and Juniper as shareholders and strategic partners (see "Cotendo Raises $17M; Announces Mobile Acceleration Suite and Partners with Citrix and Juniper"- here).

The company’s revenues for 2011 are expected to reach $20-30M. A year ago, MIT and Akamai filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Cotendo (here), shortly after AT&T announced it will use Cotendo's technology (here).

Cotendo CEO: "We have a fertile technological dialogue with Google"

 

Cotendo's (see "CDN Announcements: Cotendo's Cloudlet - Getting Closer to the Subscriber" - here) CEO, Ronni Zehavi (pictured), was interviewed to Batya Feldman, Globes, providing some insights into the company business.

Cotendo raised recently $17M from strategic (Citrix and Juniper) and existing investors (here).  Last year Akamai filed a patent infringement lawsuit against the company (here).

According to Globes, Cotendo ".. With tens of millions of dollars in annual sales, and after hiring scores of employees for its development center the company is forging ahead .. Cotendo currently has 350 paying customers .. it also has joint development agreement and fertile technological dialogue with Google".

Mr. Zehavi told Globes that "Akamai really arrived with a buzz 12 years ago and changed the market, but a few things have changed since then, and it didn’t change its business model .. Akamai has thousands of servers scattered around the world, and it's obvious that a company like us cannot set up such an infrastructure alone. That's why we decided to build a special pump that would render redundant the dispersion of servers and which would present better performance than the current architecture"

Cotendo Raises $17M; Announces Mobile Acceleration Suite and Partners with Citrix and Juniper
