InfoVista Integrates Application Visibility w/DPI, Cisco AVC and ALU RAM

InfoVista announced that the ".. latest version of 5View™ Service Data Manager (SDM) will be made generally available on May 13, 2013..  With InfoVista’s 5View SDM, CSPs can benefit from the solution’s customer-facing portal and alarm capabilities empowering business customers with real-time, detailed application performance information crucial for troubleshooting, service/application usage analysis, traffic engineering and capacity planning. The comprehensive, intuitive visibility enabled by 5View SDM drives both incremental revenue growth and the growth of CSPs’ VPN, Internet, and cloud business services.

The latest release of 5View SDM comes with pre-built integration for Cisco Application Visibility & Control (AVC)—part of the Cisco Integrated Services Routers with Application Experience (Cisco ISR-AX)—as well as for Alcatel-Lucent 5670 RAM. This provides CSPs with multiple options to launch application-aware services leveraging CE- or PE-based architectures, various vendor flow technologies including Netflow, Flexible Netflow, sflow, jflow and IPFIX as well as use InfoVista’s own DPI appliances in the data center, and in turn, offer enhanced application usage and performance visibility for enterprise customers".

NI Deployments [181]: Tunisiana Uses InfoVista to Monitor its 10G Backhaul

InfoVista announced that ".. mobile operator Tunisiana has implemented VistaInsight for Networks .. Tunisiana is using InfoVista’s solution to monitor the availability, traffic load and saturation of its newest 10-Gigabit IP backhaul network and ensure the highest quality of new 3G and fixed line services to customers .. From the IP/MPLS core through the IP backhaul and packet microwave access networks, Tunisiana can now guarantee the integrity of its IP infrastructure"

"InfoVista’s vendor-agnostic service-level reporting has enabled Tunisiana to exploit real-time performance data and historical network trends. With this information, Tunisiana is able to set a baseline for network traffic to plan future capacity across the service delivery chain and proactively troubleshoot quality of service (QoS) issues. Network planning has historically been tedious and time consuming, resulting in little insight. VistaInsight for Networks, however, allows Tunisiana to plan for and deliver a high performing network while keeping investments and operating costs under control".

Tunisiana has more than 6M subscribers.

SON Announcements: InfoVista Launches VistaSON

InfoVista, launched a "self-optimizing radio access network (RAN) solution, VistaSON, that enables mobile operators to dynamically optimize the capacity and quality of their networks .. VistaSON helps them [MNOs] safely transition from manual and suggestive network optimization with required human decision-making to a full, closed-loop, dynamic and automated practice based on pre-defined network conditions and approvals".

A hint to the related market size maybe deducted from a previous post - "AT&T Deploys Intucell SON Solution (Est. $55M Over 4 Years)" - here.

".. The solution includes a set of out-of-the-box 2G, 3G and 4G/LTE use cases that are designed to rapidly enable the automation needed for the optimization and maintenance of the network lifecycle. These include Automatic Outage Detection & Compensation, where antennas’ settings are adjusted to provide coverage when cell outages occur; Coverage & Capacity Optimization, which monitors performance metrics and identifies weak coverage and capacity spots that can be optimized to improve QoE; Dynamic Load Balancing, which helps detect network load imbalances and congestion patterns to facilitate load distribution; and Green Networks Power Savings, where under-utilized network cells are placed into a ‘sleep mode’ during periods of very low traffic".

Infonetics Research: Mobile Broadband Card Sales grew 55% in 2009

A new report from Infonetics Research provides more evidence to the phenomenal growth in mobile Internet. The report main findings are:

  • Sales of mobile broadband card market (including standard and embedded cards) were up 55% in 2009 compared to 2008, at $6.4 billion worldwide, driven in large part by increasing adoption of HSPA

  • The number of mobile broadband subscribers surpassed DSL subscribers for the first time in 2009, and is forecast by Infonetics Research to grow to 1.5 billion worldwide in 2014

"The effects of the recession continue to linger, with fewer than usual USB dongles and netbooks delivered at the end of 2009, making the normally seasonally-strong fourth quarter softer than expected for the mobile broadband device market. However, fundamental drivers remain strong and the market will continue to gather momentum, driven by HSPA, and we expect to see fewer growth blips in the future," notes Richard Webb, Infonetics Research's directing analyst for mobile devices.

More details - here.

Of course, one cannot compare the traffic generated by DSL subscribers to mobile units. Most mobile service plans are volume-limited (or usage bases) with high cost for each extra MB. So even if the total number of subscribers is now higher, the total traffic is still a fraction of the fixed network traffic. However, since the network capacity is very limited (radio, backhaul and peering links) congestion is a major problem for mobile operators and requires a DPI solution. This is a major reason for the recent growth in DPI sales, as reported by the public companies in this space.

On the same subject - a recent report from Fil Zucchi, founder and manager of Zebra Investment Advisors LLC - "Why Deep Packet Inspection Companies Are Important to Wireless Carriers" (here) summarizing: "Now more than ever carriers will need to determine who is using, and how their systems are being used, in order to customize their networks and service accordingly. In addition, part of the solution to the growing bottlenecks in the “wireless backhaul” portion of networks will be the ability to prioritize traffic as it’s sent from the towers to the core of the IP network ... these companies [Sandvine Corp., Bridgwater Systems, RedKnee Solutions, Infovista SA, and Allot Communications] may well be sitting in the sweet spot of the next evolution in broadband services."
