Openwave: 3 Tier1 Operators Deployed SDM Solution (Verizon?)

  
Openwave Mobility announced that "three Tier-1 operators have deployed its Subscriber Data Management (SDM) solutions
  • Openwave Mobility maintains the largest SDM/UDR (User Data Repository) deployment in the world with over 130 million subscribers at a Tier-1 operator in North America 

    [At the end of Q3, 2015, Verizon had 137.553M and AT&T had 126.406 wireless subscribers - here. Openwave could not  comment due to NDA with the cusotmer].
     
  • The SDM solutions are also being deployed with a Tier-1 operator in Japan
     
  • One of the largest group operators based in Europe. 
SDM is being utilized by these operators to address critical use cases such as UDR and identity management solutions. Some of these operators are now looking to deploy IoT devices.

In addition, Openwave Mobility has deployed its Smart User Repository (SUR) with several operators. SUR seeks to provide centralized management of all subscriber data. This allows operators to reduce service innovation cycles by exploiting common subscriber information

[Infonetics]: SDM Market Grew by 29%, to $1.4B in 2014


A recent research by Shira Levine [pictured], research director for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research finds that the "worldwide subscriber data management (SDM) market grew 29 percent in 2014 over 2013, to $1.4 billion, fueled by operator demand for voice over LTE (VoLTE) and subscriber analytics .. momentum around big data and analytics has the potential to have an even more significant impact on the SDM market, as operators seek to break down the data silos that exist within their organizations and better leverage subscriber data to improve the customer experience and drive additional revenue


Other findings:
  • "Operators are looking to deploy subscriber data management (SDM) as a centralized subscriber data repository that can be integrated with multiple front-end applications potentially from multiple vendors
     
  • Virtualization of front-end applications such as home subscriber server (HSS) and policy and charging rules function (PCRF) are well underway, and virtualization of the backend SDM platform is following suit, but concerns about reliability, availability and security persist"

Infonetics Increases SDM Market size Forecast


A new report by Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research finds that "..the subscriber data management (SDM) market reached $1.1 billion in 2013 and demand for solutions that enable operators to consolidate and manage subscriber data more efficiently to drive the SDM market to $2.5 billion in 2018 .. the next big thing in subscriber data management will be monetizing that unified data. Many operators are already leveraging consolidated subscriber data for internal use, and some are exploring options for brokering that data externally
Last November, Infonetics predicted a a $1.9B market for 2017 (here), and a year ago a $1.8M for 2017 (here). It seems like the market growth rate accelerates.

[Analysys Mason]: SDP Market (Incl. PCC) Generated $5.2B in 2013


According to a new report by Glen Ragoonanan [pictured], Principal Analyst, and Gorkem Yigit, Research Analyst, Analysys Mason "The service delivery platforms (SDP) market generated USD5.2 billion in revenue worldwide during 2013, up 12% from USD4.6 billion in 2012. In 2013, communications service providers (CSPs) spent on service delivery platforms (SDP) solutions to monetise LTE and FTTx infrastructure investments. Voice (IMS/VoLTE) and video (multi-screen) services also continued to drive CSPs’ SDP spending as they compete with over-the-top (OTT) providers. 

Analysis Mason's SDP refers to "four application sub-segments: telecoms application servers (TAS), content management and delivery (CMD): fixed (FCMD) and mobile (MCMD), policy management (PM) and subscriber data management (SDM)"




The top-five suppliers in this market were the same as in 2012, thanks to numerous acquisitions. Ericsson maintained its leadership, followed by Huawei Technologies, Nokia Solutions and Networks, Alcatel-Lucent, and then Oracle.

SDM Deployments [295]: Verizon Selected ALU to Support LTE Expansion


Alcatel-Lucent announced that "Verizon Wireless is to deploy Alcatel-Lucent’s advanced data management platform throughout its network, helping to support the carrier’s LTE expansion. The Alcatel-Lucent Subscriber Data Manager (SDM), part of the company’s IMS Subsystem portfolio of technologies designed to enable rich multimedia applications, will help support the expansion of Verizon’s LTE services by centralizing multiple application databases.



Verizon has chosen a comprehensive subscriber data management solution that also includes Alcatel-Lucent’s SDM, Motive Authentication, Authorization and Accounting Server, Centralized Operations Manager, and SDM Expert products as well as the VoLTE feature set"

[Infonetics]: VoLTE is the Accelerator for an Expected $1.9B SDM Market (2017)


A recent report by Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research finds that "After several years on the back burner, the concept of the user data repository, where subscriber data is consolidated in a centralized repository, is finally taking off .. Use cases such as revenue assurance, churn management, and opex savings have long been drivers behind user data repository spending, but voice over LTE (VoLTE) has proven to be a real accelerator, as has interest in leveraging subscriber data to better enable monetization of the network


"The global subscriber data management market is forecast by Infonetics to grow to $1.9 billion by 2017, fueled by the big data trend". [Infonetics]: SDM Market Looks for Strong Analytics; to Reach $1.8B by 2017;

   
Shira Levine (pictured), directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research, updated its Subscriber Data Management Software and Services market size and forecast report concluding that "the global subscriber data management market, including software and services for mobile and fixed-line networks, grew 45% in 2012 to $792 million .. will reach $1.8B in 2017 .. Oracle’s acquisition of Tekelec strengthens its position in the SDM space by providing database and analytics technology as well as network and IT data sources .. As analytics become a key part of operators’ SDM strategies, those SDM suppliers with strong analytics capabilities will assume a leadership role".

As the ‘big data’ trend continues to influence the telecom sector, operators are becoming more aggressive with their subscriber data management strategies, including expanding beyond the network to incorporate data sources such as OSS, billing, and customer care, This is driving demand for solutions that enable better consolidation of subscriber data and spurring interest in the tight integration between SDM and policy, allowing operators to close the loop and make more focused and targeted policy decisions”.

PCC Deployments [238]: Tango [Luxembourg] Use NSN for Differentiating Services


Nokia Siemens Networks announced that "Tango, Luxembourg’s innovative telco operator, has become the country’s first to offer 4G mobile broadband services and provide personal mobile data service plans .. Nokia Siemens Networks implemented subscriber data management allowing the operator to provide country’s first personalized data tariffs".

At the end of 2012, Tango, part of Belgacom, had 271,000 active mobile customers .



"Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its Liquid Core-based Evolved Packet Core (EPC) platform, including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway) for the operator to replace outdated equipment and launch the LTE services.. In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks implemented its subscriber data management system, including the One-NDS real-time subscriber data repository and data-less Home Location Register, and consolidated Tango’s subscriber data from across the network. The company also provided its highly scalable Policy Control Server (PCS 5000) that optimizes traffic based on a set of business rules. Nokia Siemens Networks’ network management system, NetAct, provides one consolidated view on all network elements".

[Guest Post]: Transforming Subscriber Data into Business Opportunities – Part 2

In the previous post, we described the importance of driving clear ownership and accountability of user data policy and management within the operator organization to truly achieve SDM new monetization opportunities. In this second part, we will see how the trend of centralizing user data from an organizational and political perspective is being reflected in the realms of technology.

Challenged of federated models

Many operators have taken the “quick fix” approach of data federation to provide a virtual logical view of user data and to hide the fact that data is actually stored in a multitude of separate back-ends. The main driver for this implementation is to provide the least disruptive path for achieving logical user data consolidation across the network.

However when such solutions are considered permanent, they jeopardize the long-term ability of the mobile broadband operator to truly transform their user data into monetization opportunities. Hybrid or federated consolidation models have the following fundamental short-comings: 
  • They do not solve the root cause of the data everywhere problem: operators have simply added plumbing software layer on top of their silo’ed services and back-ends. Under the hood no consolidation has actually taken place, neither in the infrastructure nor at the organizational level.
     
  • Dealing with multiple data backends who have different data models requires complex data processing capabilities to be built in the federation middle-ware; in addition data provisioning and retrieval flows have to take into account failure conditions through challenging roll-back procedures prone to leaving dirty data in the midst
     
  • Provisioning complexity and lack of true consolidation eventually leads to increased latency as a single request might end up being forked into multiple sub-requests to distinct back-ends before all the replies get compiled into a single response
     
  • It is not possible to guarantee the overall performance of the solution since the weakest element of a federated infrastructure becomes the weakness of the entire system
3GPP originally advocated the federated SDM models through the GUP server standardization that provided a middle-ware layer responsible for the implementation of data retrieval logic (to determine which back-end a request should be routed to) and access-control definition (to determine who can get which data). Luckily SDM solutions went through a maturation process over 5 years to arrive at the conclusion: true data centralization cannot be realized logically and requires abstraction between the applications and the data store.
  
Towards User Data Convergence
  
After having tackled the user “data everywhere challenge” for a number of years, 3GPP eventually settled on a simple architecture known as User Data Convergence (UDC) with the introduction of the User Data Repository component (UDR) and the definition of the Ud reference point towards external application front-ends. The work started in 2009 with the definition of the service requirements (3GPP TR22.985) supported by major Tier1 carriers and reached completion in Rel10 with the UDC technical specification (3GPP TS-29.335) standarizing the UDC architecture. Since then only minor improvements have been added to the now solid and stable UDC foundation, including: 
  • 3GPP TS-32.182 started the definition of objects and relationship (end-user, subscription, servce profile, identifier) towards a Common Baseline Information Model (CBIM)
     
  • 3GPP TR-32.901 studied the UDC information model handling and provisioning to develop understanding, guidelines, and preliminary requirements for the BSS provisioning capabilities and information model handling when new applications and related services are implemented in the operator’s UDR
As Diameter is becoming a popular transport protocol in mobile broadband architectures, operators also have the option to use a Diameter based interface against the UDR with the 3GPP Sh interface (3GPP 29.329) which initially was used to exchange user profile, location information, and charging function addresses in the IMS realm (between SIP AS and HSS).
Compared to the federated models, the 3GPP User Data Convergence model provides an efficient, mature and standardized way for achieving user convergence without any middle-ware layer as long as front-ends and the UDR back-end talk the same Ud/Sh protocol, something any mobile broadband operator willing to adhere to the UDC deployment model should enforce on vendors. Given the duality between LDAP and Diameter, it is important to takes a best of breed approach with a UDR capable of supporting both stacks on the same software component to avoid the need for deploying new software or even new hardware when the operator wants to make use of the Sh interface in the future. 

Think “push” rather than “pull”
   
It is often overlooked that the 3GPP UD interface specifications give operators more than a simple data storage and retrieval mechanism. While the main purpose of the interface is to allow any front-end (service or application platform) to query, create or update the user data information over a standard LDAPv3 interface, 3GPP also defined a new synchronization and replication mechanism by permitting front-ends to subscribe to any user data changes happening in the UDR and being notified over a standard HTTP/SOAP interface.
  
This is an important aspect of the UDC architecture as it goes beyond the traditional pull mechanism for getting updated user data information. This notification mechanism based on a subscription/push model is a game changer as it provides a simple, yet efficient, way to keep local caches/stores synchronized with the centralized UDR master. It provides the possibility of easily implementing new use cases that require a real time view of the subscriber data. As immediacy and instant gratification becomes the standard of Internet services (1-Click real-time experience), mobile operators need to look at new ways to provide real-time self-care capabilities where user self-care interactions immediately take effect on their traffic management or charging infrastructure. Examples of such services include roaming plan sign-up or application-based charging top-up scenarios where service activation immediacy is required.
  
With 3GPP push-based architectures operators can now consider launching new services that have strong real-time requirements between user interactions and network infrastructure.
   
Conclusion
   
Making user data convergence part of the network modernization agenda and executing organizational adjustments to clarify ownership and responsibility of data across the organization are key commitments operators need to make to fully benefit from SDM solutions. Failing to do this they won’t be able to set the growth for the future without solid subscriber data management foundations.

[Guest Post]: Transforming Subscriber Data into Business Opportunities – Part 1

As mobile operators shift from network- to subscriber-oriented models, analysts keep predicting subscriber data management (SDM) market revenue growth for SDM software and services. During the past five years as mobile data growth went through the long-expected hockey stick pattern, a number of services or applications were touted to become the key drivers for SDM implementations: mobile advertising, data-as-a-service, privacy management, policy and charging, Wi-Fi offload and VoIP to name a few. Recently convergence, LTE network modernization and the rise of the identity economy are re-igniting SDM market growth expectations.

SDM objectives and benefits are often looked at only from a technical and operating angle, reflecting the immediate operator need to reduce the cost of managing and maintaining multiple subscriber databases, as well as their desire to create a consolidated view of the subscriber across those data sources. 
Nevertheless as discussed in the first part of this guest post, SDM has the potential to shake the carrier political and organizational structure around user data management, a necessary step for unveiling monetization opportunities beyond the existing SDM use cases.

Operators are well aware that user data is spread across their mobile broadband network: CRM information, billing details, subscription plans, web portal authentication, authorization for 3G or WiFi access, policy and charging user profiles, IMS-related service definition and personalization for VoIP features such as presence-based call forwarding. The list grows as new services are launched as all subscriber-related information and functions in IT, core and value-added service (VAS) networks fall under the scope of SDM.

SDM typically summarizes the problem of the distributed nature of data in multiple parts of the network as information islands. While this is true, it wouldn’t constitute a fundamental issue if this data were not to be used by an increasing number of components relying on the user information in an interdependent fashion. The core challenge lies in the fact that as subscriber-driven business models transform how carriers operate, more network elements will rely and interact with subscriber information in real-time. In a 4G network for instance, more than a dozen 3GPP components can easily be identified as interacting with user data information to perform their task (Figure 1). Add IT and CRM components and this number doubles. Obviously this is an unsustainable situation that leads to increased costs, complexity and lengthy network implementations which ultimately results in missed opportunities for the operator.

But even when the benefits of SDM are well understood and accepted by the operator, the cost of initiating a data consolidation initiative often appears as a major road-block. Ironically this cost is not measured in financial terms, but in human or organizational costs. Because user data is spread across the entire operator organization and because ownership of data is synonymous with organizational power, breaking silo implementations in favor of centralization often ends up as a political battle within the operator entity. 

However, avoiding or postponing consolidation comes at the expense of the network infrastructure becoming more cluttered, degrading further the relationships between organizations. What then happens is the marketing or services department finds out the policy and charging infrastructure (PCC) is out of sync with the IT user data, or federated implementations no longer meet throughput growth requirements, or the core network and IT departments suddenly realize their service and marketing counterpart incorrectly specified which user data should be considered as an information asset and which is just digital noise.
  
By addressing the user data management architectural challenges, SDM actually becomes a catalyst and vector to improve both human and political management around user data leading to positive organizational outcomes.
  
Extracting the financial value
   
Cost-reduction and network simplification are important aspects of SDM, but the real goal is to transform user data into a financial asset. Use cases touted by SDM constitute today’s low-hanging fruit generated by the effect of user data consolidation. For instance: 
  • Improving operators’ understanding of subscribers increases operator accuracy in targeting markets and reinforces the operator’s role in the value chain
     
  • Delivering real-time engagement in the Internet era of immediacy leads to improved end-user experience and reduced churn
     
  • As data consolidation progressively grows in scope and in the nature of user data, so will the value towards 3rd parties for operators looking at exposing their user data assets through open APIs
However, this is just the beginning. If we take a more holistic view on how subscriber data is being managed and leveraged across different industries like the Internet, insurance or others, we realize that mobile broadband operators are just in their infancy in the way they deal with user data.
  
Over the past decade, major Internet players have grown their value by extracting increasingly precise user information through various profiling techniques. It has been used to improve their online merchandizing efficiency under the form of advertising or social recommendations. Recently more refined and subtle approaches, such as “A/B testing”, have appeared. This has rapidly become a standard (but seldom advertised) means through which some Internet companies improve their online products.

A/B Testing can be summarized as a framework for managing focus-groups being tested in real time. Without notice, a set of users are presented a slightly different version of a given web page or content and their behavior compared against the remaining users. If the new version gives better results in terms of clicks, longer visits, or more purchases, it will displace the original; if the new version is not leading to positive outcomes, it is quietly phased out.
  
A/B methodology is just an example of how the dynamic use of user data for defining and validating relationship between user segmentation can translate into potential monetization opportunities. If mobile broadband operators believe user data will be at the heart of their business decisions in the near future, they should look at SDM solutions that can yield high impact on their new services launches. Rethinking user service engagement and life-cycle campaign management is a first step in the right direction. In a context where market campaigns are traditionally rolled out through lengthy projects and massive launch cycles, having the ability, technically and organizationally, to pick and choose a limited set of real users based on their subscriber profile, launch the service in a targeted manner, measure the outcome and reiterate quickly is a great way to transform user data knowledge into business opportunities.

Infonetics Lowers 2016 SDM Revenues to $1.5B


A new research by Shira Levine, directing analyst for service enablement and subscriber intelligence, Infonetics Research concludes that "The global subscriber data management (SDM) market, including SDM software and services for mobile and fixed-line networks, is on track to grow 38% in 2012 over 2011 and by 2016, Infonetics expects the global SDM market to reach $1.5 billion".

In May Infonetics' forecast was that "the SDM software and services market to grow to $1.86 billion by 2016" [here]Signals and Systems said recently that "The SDM software and services market is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 30 % from 2011 through 2016, eventually accounting for nearly 2 Billion USD in revenue" [here].

A new report by Signals and Systems Telecom concludes that "..As Carriers worldwide devise emergent strategies on network modernization including LTE (Long Term Evolution), Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) investments, SDM is rapidly gaining popularity. The SDM software and services market is expected to grow at a CAGR of nearly 30 % from 2011 through 2016, eventually accounting for nearly 2 Billion USD in revenue".

Analysis Mason: "CSPs are uncertain of the ROI of many innovative policy use cases"


An updated report by Glen Raggoonanan (pictured), Senior Analyst, Analysys Mason condlues that "The SDP market generated USD3.84 billion in revenue in 2011, up from USD3.73 billion in 2010. Revenue grew by 3% year-on-year, as CSPs concentrated on internal SDP development, instead of buying from vendors. Spending on internal development is not included in our market shares and forecasts .. The addition of SDM to the SDP segment has increased the market shares of the network equipment manufacturers ..Most policy charging and rules function (PCRF) deployments addressed basic policy use cases".

  • Zero-rating Facebook and ‘happy-hour’ PM use cases were the most common mobile data service offerings.

[Infonetics]: SDM Market to Reach $1.9B by 2016; Oracle and Amdocs Compete



A new research by Shira Levine (pictured), directing analyst for next gen OSS and policy at Infonetics Research concludes that "The global subscriber data management (SDM) market, including SDM software and services for mobile and fixed line networks, reached $570 million in 2011, up 57% from 2010 .. [and] forecasts the SDM software and services market to grow to $1.86 billion by 2016, driven increasingly by network modernization initiatives, particularly LTE deployments, which are prompting mobile operator interest in the separation of back-end SDM databases from front-end applications to consolidate subscriber data".

Last year's forecast by Infonetics was $1.5B for 2015 (here), and $1.5B for 2014 forecasted in October 2010 (here).

PCRF Deployments [140]: Starhub [Singapore] Selected NSN

 
Nokia Siemens Networks announced that "StarHub, the second largest mobile operator in Singapore, has selected Nokia Siemens Networks as its LTE (4G) mobile broadband infrastructure and services vendor".
  
NSN will ".. provide StarHub its Single RAN platform, built around the compact, energy efficient Flexi Multiradio Base Station, which will enable StarHub to run GSM and LTE concurrently on the 1800 MHz band. The company will also provide its Evolved Packet Core* platform including Flexi NS (Network Server) and Flexi NG (Network Gateway - (W/DPI - here). In addition, Nokia Siemens Networks will provide software for personalized customer experience management, including Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF - PCS-5000 here) and One-NDS subscriber data management (SDM)".

SDM Deployments [114]: Vodafone Egypt Deploys NSN One-NDS/NetAct for Personalization, Monitoring and Optimization

 
Nokia Siemens Networks announced that "Subscribers of Vodafone Egypt, the country’s largest telecom operator, will soon enjoy a host of customized services. The operator is upgrading its subscriber data management system built on the One-NDS platform provided by Nokia Siemens Networks. This will enable Vodafone Egypt to speed up the process of launching new, targeted services .. Nokia Siemens Networks’ NetAct [see below] network management system will enable effective monitoring, management and optimization of Vodafone Egypt’s network"

Vodafone Egypt had over 35M mobile subscribers on September 30, 2011 of which 96% were used a pre-paid service. Vodafone says on its 2011 H1 report that  "In Egypt the economic environment remains challenging. Whilst Egypt service revenue was flat year-on-year in H1, growth in Q2 was 1.2%, driven by an increase in the customer base and improved data usage offsetting a decline in messaging and visitor revenue" (here).

Ovum: Operators Dissatisfied with SDM Solutions; Expect More Business Value


   
While the Subscriber Data Management market is "is forecast to grow rapidly over the next few years" (here) and supported by giants such as Oracle and Amdocs, it seems that something is still missing and operators do not find the solution they really need.
 
Shagun Bali (pictured), Analyst, Telecoms Technology, Ovum recommends vendors in the SDM space to "..revisit their marketing and partnering strategies. As the telecoms industry evolves toward more subscriber  personalization, operators have similar expectations from their suppliers as well".

"A key message from the recent [SDM and Data Warehousing Summitwas that operators are dissatisfied with vendors’ current [SDM] offerings. Operators’ focus has shifted from reducing costs to delivering value and managing customers’ experience over their networks. They expect vendors to understand and help them deliver business value. Vendors also showcased their SDM capabilities to help operators overcome their data management challenges. But overall, operators’ challenges outpace vendors’ current solutions"

"Operators were enthusiastic in discussing the potential they see in using subscriber data in more sophisticated ways. Operators treat such data as a strategic asset – the oil that will fuel their future growth. Some take the idea so far as to see themselves transforming in five years or so into companies that primarily manage data and also provide communications services"
