[PeerApp]: Caching iOS9 Delivered 80% of the Traffic


Dan Rayburn posted some information. collected by PeerApp and US ISPs on iOS9 download traffic:

".. around 1pm ET on Wednesday after iOS 9 was released, combined traffic from iOS 9 downloads spiked to almost 13Gbps. Nearly 80% (over 10Gbps) of this traffic is being delivered through PeerApp’s cache, avoiding congesting of the operator and University network. 



Looking at individual systems, PeerApp said they are seeing speed improvements on the order to 10-20x; meaning customers served by their caches are getting the apple.com traffic 10-20x faster from cache. One University in particular is experiencing up to 100x speed improvement in downloads.

..In conversations I’ve had with some ISPs in the U.S., iOS 9 downloads have been accounting for anywhere between 8%-15% of traffic inside their network"

Parallel Wireless Enhances PeerApp and Saguna MEC Solution


Parallel Wireless announced a "partnership to enhance the Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) solution provided by PeerApp and Saguna Networks. Saguna’s technology is incorporated in PeerApp’s previously announced MEC solution (see "PeerApp Integrates Saguna's Mobile Edge Solution" - here and "Mobile Edge Computing Group Formed" - here).

To further improve backhaul capacity for the PeerApp/Saguna MEC solution architecture, Parallel Wireless is using its software-defined, multi-mode, multi-band Converged Wireless System (CWS) base station and HetNet Gateway (HNG) orchestrator.

[Technavio]: 33% CAGR for Transparent Caching Market 2015-2019


A new report by Yechnavio finds that the "global transparent caching market is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 33% from 2015-2019.

.. over the last five years, global consumer Internet traffic has increased by more than five times. OTT content such as videos, file sharing, web surfing, and online gaming have grown significantly. Web surfing includes accessing web content, emails, and online data, apart from videos.

This is a small CAGR increase compared to the previous report predicting a 31.3% for 2013-2018 (here).

"The traffic is expected to increase from 34.29 Exabytes per month, in 2014, to over 98.16 Exabytes per month, by 2019. An increase in Internet traffic will increase the demand for transparent caching from network operators and MSOs. It will also help the operators provide the highest QoE to their subscribers and achieve cost efficiency.

Key Vendors: Akamai Technologies, Blue Coat Systems, Juniper Networks, PeerApp and Qwilt.

PeerApp Integrates Saguna's Mobile Edge Solution


PeerApp announced an "..evolution of its current mobile core offerings to bring Internet content acceleration to the edge of mobile networks with the Saguna Open-RAN leading Mobile Edge Computing platform. The PeerApp Mobile Edge Computing solution will complement the existing PeerApp mobile core solution by bringing optimization functionality such as content caching, DNS (domain name server) caching, and video optimization to the Radio Access Network (RAN). The new solution will deliver hierarchical caching that expands into the RAN.

The PeerApp Mobile Edge Computing solution, powered by Saguna, leverages Network Function Virtualization (NFV) to bring cloud and virtualization concepts to the RAN; this allows applications to run as close as possible to the subscriber. As a result, subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE) – which is particularly challenging with mobile video – is improved. This also changes mobile network operator (MNO) economics by increasing margin and opening monetization opportunities"

Apple IOS8 Update - DDoS Attack? Can Cache Help?


Some traffic management aspects of the recent iOS8 release:
  • Procera Networks' blog explains that ".. the latest IOS 8 update has hit some networks pretty hard. Several of our customers had such severe traffic spikes that they initially thought that they were under a DDOS attack ..  because the DDOS protection mechanisms implemented in the Procera solution kicked in, and customers were concerned that there was a wide-scale attack occurring. Using our Dynamic LiveView technology, we were able to quickly isolate the problems to Apple Devices and the Apple Update signature.
    The worst case we saw occurred in a CIS mobile network
    [left chart], where traffic jumped an almost astonishing 4000% at peak from normal to become one of the biggest traffic sources on the network. This bandwidth was achieved even with the operator managing the traffic using fair usage for each subscriber to ensure that the rest of the network traffic was not affected by the download. This is an astonishing number for a non-video application, and is the network equivalent of an Apple flash mob.

  • The European mobile network below saw
    [right chart] a big spike of over 1Gbps of Apple store updates in a very short time, with Apple Updates going from .01% of total network traffic to over 6% of the total traffic.

  • PeerApp has "released data that shows 96 percent of iOS 8 requests through PeerApp customers were served from the cache, allowing subscribers to download the update much more quickly. PeerApp measured apple.com traffic of a sample of customers over the period of September 15th – 21st, and found traffic peaked after the iOS 8 release to over 4 Terabytes per hour – a rate four times higher than normal traffic peaks of 1 Terabyte per hour".

PeerApp: 450 Deployments; 50 New Customers in 2014; New Tier1 Deal


A blog post by Gadi Tamari, [pictured] the recently appointed PeerApp CEO (here) describes the company as " .. market leaders, with 450 deployments globally managing an aggregate of 3 Terabits capacity .. We’ve also gained a lot new customers in 2014 – 50 to be exact. It is great to see global Tier One operators embracing PeerApp solutions to help turn challenges into the opportunity of improved QoE; with 10 Tier One operators joining us as customers in 2014 (see "Quality of Experience Drives Adoption of PeerApp Solutions" - here).

PeerApp and Sandvine Demo NFV-based Content Caching (w/Sandvine Steering)


PeerApp announced it will "demonstrate the industry's first virtualized content caching solution in cooperation with intelligent broadband solutions provider Sandvine and Dell at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) .. PeerApp and Sandvine's solutions are already integrated at dozens of operators globally using traditional deployment models [see "Sandvine: 40 Joint Deployments with PeerApp, Mobixell and Netsweeper" - here]

This demonstration shows a virtualized content caching solution using PeerApp's UltraBand caching engine in conjunction with a patented application-specific Divert solution enabled by the Sandvine Policy Engine, both running on virtual machines hosted on Dell hardware.

[TechNavio]: Transparent Cache Market to Grow at 31% CAGR


A new report by TechNavio finds that ".. Transparent caching is a solution that enables the service provider to offload a significant amount of content traffic by storing a cached copy of the popular content close to the edge of the network, which is delivered to the user directly from the edge of the network rather than from the source. It is invisible to both the content originator and the end user, hence the name. 

TechNavio's analysts forecast the Global Transparent Caching market to grow at a CAGR of 31.3 percent over the period 2013-2018".

PeerApp, Limelight and Sandvine Show Policy-Managed Delivery of 4K Video over CDN and Operator Cache


PeerApp announced that it has "successfully demonstrated its implementation of the Content Service Extension (see "PeerApp, EdgeCast and Limelight Create Open Framework for Content Delivery" - here) architecture in cooperation with Sandvine and  Limelight Networks

The demonstration features managed delivery of 4K video content from Limelight’s global CDN footprint into the home, triggering operator caching and network Quality of Service (QoS) extension services in a trusted and controlled fashion. The operator-side implementation of the CSE service architecture includes PeerApp’s UltraBand cache and CSE controller platforms as well as Sandvine’s Service Delivery Engine (SDE) .. This offers a first time reference implementation of an end-to-end content delivery architecture utilizing a global CDN footprint in combination with operator caching and guaranteed QoS, using the Packet Cable Multimedia (PCMM) standard, defined and promoted by the PacketCable industry consortium, founded by CableLabs"

$5M MSO Deal for PeerApp (Transparent Cache)


PeerApp announced it has "closed a deal worth approximately five million dollars for caching infrastructure with an operating unit of a Tier One cable operator.

Before the implementation of operator caching, the cable operator's subscribers were unhappy with the quality of their broadband service, and had complaints despite the operator’s investment in robust infrastructure. This was due to congestion at internet traffic exchange points that are not managed by the operator, but through which traffic destined for end-users needed to pass. By deploying Ultraband, the operator was able to bring the most popular and frequently accessed content onto its network and manage the quality of its delivery.

[GigaOM] Content, Service Providers and Caching Vendors Cooperate


Interesting report by Stacey Higginbotham [pictured], GigaOM, following "Content companies including Viacom and HBO have met with folks from Comcast, Qwilt [see "Qwilt Adds Live Streaming Caching" - hereand others to discuss transparent caching as a way to solve the problem of online video".

"One solution to this challenge [delivery of streamin video] is transparent caching, where operators buy software that allows them to manage and cache content inside their networks without the operator having to intervene in determining the cached content. A group of content providers, network gear providers and ISPs are evaluating transparent caching as part of an unannounced standards group seeking to improve online video delivery overall".

"Big content companies don’t want to pay a middle man to deliver their content, when they are delivering so much of it. That’s one reason for the Netflix and Comcast showdown [see "Comcast and Netflix - BFF ("no preferential network treatment") - here]But vendors from Cisco [see "Cisco Partners with PeerApp" - here] to startups like PeerApp [see "[F&S]: 'PeerApp is the clear current market leader in the transparent caching industry'"- here] and Qwilt are experimenting with an alternative called transparent caching. Unlike traditional caches where the content lives outside the operator network and is managed by a more manual process of purging and refreshing caches at different intervals, transparent caching is deployed inside the ISP’s network and uses software to understand what content needs to be cached without human intervention".

Cache Deployments [282]: Telefonica Media Networks [Latam] Selected PeerApp


PeerApp announced that it has been "selected by Media Networks Latin America, a B2B unit of Telefonica Digital, to implement its UltraBand caching system across the company’s Latin America Satellite Broadband Internet access network".

Fernando Blácido [pictured], ISAT Technical Manager of Media Networks said: “We offer wholesale satellite residential broadband service to operators in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru .. With UltraBand we can ensure that the most popular content will be delivered at the advertised speed of our service. PeerApp caching is enabling us to fully leverage our larger infrastructure investments.

Verizon Acquires EdgeCast; Will it Serve DT and TeliaSonera?

  
Verizon announced a "definitive agreement under which the company will acquire EdgeCast, an industry leader in content delivery networks. Verizon Digital Media Services will integrate EdgeCast complementary capabilities to further improve and increase its ability to meet the exponential growth in online digital media content, as well as broaden its portfolio of site acceleration services for digital enterprises.

EdgeCast has more than 6,000 accounts and serves some of the world’s leading Web brands for global media delivery and acceleration services". 


Nevertheless, EdgeCast also have carriers as customers: Deutsche Telekom [here], TeliaSonera [here] and Telin [here]. I wonder what will happen here. PeerApp, EdgeCast's caching partner may enjoy this as well (see "PeerApp and EdgeCast Offer Operators Joint CDN/Caching Solution" - here).

Cache Deployments [270]: Mediatti [U.S. military bases] Selected PeerApp

  
PeerApp announced it has been "..selected by Mediatti Broadband Communications to provide its UltraBand transparent caching platform. UltraBand enables Mediatti to deliver Internet video and data content with dramatically improved quality".

This is PeerApp's 2nd cable operator customer serving US military bases in Japan (see "Americable [Japan] Saves 33% Bandwidth with PeerApp" - here).

"Mediatti is owned by Liberty Global plc, the world’s largest international cable company, and certain funds of the Olympus Capital Asia private equity group. Mediatti provides broadband Internet service and cable television programming to all of the U.S. military bases located in Okinawa, Japan. Serving these communities presents unique challenges. Mediatti’s customers use almost 80% more data per month than the typical U.S. household and demand is highly variable based on large-scale personnel movements. A high proportion of this content originates from the U.S. mainland, exposing it to delays from trans-Pacific links".

PeerApp Won 3 Tier1 Global Operators; Has 350 Deployments


The competition and traction on the transparent caching market increases (see "Qwilt Expects to Win AT&T and Comcast" - here - and note the comment made by readers). According to the vendor announcements and subject to their definition of Tier1 operator (and the scope of deployment in each) it seems that the market may be appealing also to larger operators.
 
PeerApp, the market leader with 27% market share [Frost & Sullivan, June 2013] announced that "..three global tier 1 network operators deployed the company’s award-winning UltraBand platform in the first half of 2013. PeerApp was chosen after extensive field trials in the operators’ LTE and fiber-to-the-home networks, against competing offerings. PeerApp announced that it has been "..selected by MTN Cyprus to provide its UltraBand transparent caching platform. UltraBand will help MTN Cyprus deliver Internet content, including video and multimedia, with improved quality, while reducing associated network congestion and costs.

Cache Deployments [254]: Americable [Japan] Saves 33% Bandwidth with PeerApp


PeerApp announced it has been "..selected by Americable Japan to provide its UltraBand transparent caching platform. UltraBand helps Americable Japan deliver Internet content, including video and multimedia, with improved quality, while reducing associated network congestion and costs. 

Americable Japan provides broadband Internet service and cable television programming to U.S. naval bases throughout Japan. Serving these communities presents unique challenges. Since late 2012 the subscriber base has grown at an annual rate of 24%. A high proportion of the content originates from the U.S. mainland, exposing it to delays from trans-Pacific links. Also, demand is highly variable based on large-scale personnel movements as ships come and go.

Americable has reported that UltraBand consistently serves from cache over a third of the traffic that it processes, effectively precluding Internet bandwidth constraints from impacting subscriber experience"
