ipoque Joins ALU's NFV Ecosystem


ipoque announced it has "joined Alcatel-Lucent’s Cloudband Ecosystem Program, a community of 60+ like-minded NFV innovators accelerating the reality of network functions virtualization (NFV).

With the agreement, ipoque committed to contributing its R&S PACE protocol and application classification engine to the program, an OEM software for application-awareness, designed to run in virtual environments with no loss of performance"

[Infonetics]: The DPI Market is Slow to Adapt NFV; to Reach $972M in 2015


A new report by Shira Levine [pictured], research director for service enablement and subscriber intelligence IHS on the DPI market:
  • "projecting the global deep packet inspection (DPI) market to grow to $972 million in 2015, up 15 percent year-over-year, as communications service providers continue to use DPI as a key tool for bandwidth management and the creation of new services and feature ..
     
  • The majority of the traditional DPI appliance suppliers had a challenging first half of 2015, but smaller players, particularly the embedded DPI suppliers such as Qosmos, saw healthy year-over-year growth [see "Openwave Mobility Integrates Qosmos' DPI " - here]

NEC and NetCracker Released a Virtual IMS Solution for VoLTE


NEC Corporation and NetCracker Technology announced that they have ".. released a virtualized IP multimedia subsystem (vIMS) solution through their joint business brand, NEC/NetCracker SDN/NFV Solutions. The NFV-based vIMS solution offers both control and data plane functionalities of IMS for 3G mobile voice services (W-CDMA) and voice over LTE (VoLTE) services. It has successfully achieved the same service quality levels of those realized in a physical environment.

.. The vIMS solution provides users with high-quality VoLTE and high-definition video calling, leveraging general-purpose servers that share resources with other virtual network functions and IT functions. By virtualizing IMS, the vIMS solution can reduce service delivery and assurance costs while optimizing performance attributes such as quality of service and delay.

The vIMS leverages the technical functionality of NEC’s VoLTE solution. Demonstrating high availability and reliability for signaling and protocol handling and data processing, the VoLTE solution is operating live in commercial networks such as those provided by NTT DOCOMO"

Allot Launches a Virtual Gateway and Services @200Gbps/Server

 
Allot Communications announced the "Allot Service Gateway-Virtual Edition and its portfolio of pre-integrated services. Together, they comprise a complete Allot Virtual Network Function (VNF) solution underpinning the company’s network functions virtualization (NFV) strategy aimed at easing service deployment and accelerating time-to-revenue for service providers.

".. To that end, a Tolly Performance Report published today verified that a single instance of an Allot Security VNF delivered performance on the brink of 200Gbps while inspecting traffic at wire speed and performing URL filtering"

Sandvine NFV Reaches 1.1 Tbps Throughput w/10 RU of Servers


Sandvine announced that "NFV Now a Reality for Operators of Any Size 

.. the Sandvine Policy Traffic Switch (PTS) Virtual Series has established a new Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) performance benchmark by achieving 1.1 Tbps of throughput performance.

.. The test conducted by Sandvine utilized a Dell™ PowerEdge™ M1000e Blade Enclosure, 14 Dell™ PowerEdge™ M630 Blade ServersIntel® Xeon® processors E5 v3, Intel® Ethernet Converged Network Adapters X540 and X710, the Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) providing exceptional packet processing performance, and the Intel® Open Network Platform Reference Architecture (Intel® ONP)".

The suite is also designed to help streamline the operational delivery of customer orders—including high-growth B2B and wholesale orders—enabling CSPs to capitalize on the opportunities of a network function virtualization (NFV)-driven communications world

Allot Offers NFV-Based TDF and Security Functions Over HP's OpenNFV

Allot Communications announced its participation in the "HP OpenNFV Partner Program ..  As part of the program, Allot will be offering its virtual Traffic Detection Function (vTDF) [see "Allot Enhances DPI Gateway with Standard TDF" - hereand security services on the HP OpenNFV platform. The integration demonstrates service enablement and delivery for virtual security services that are deployed over the HP OpenNFV cloud environment platform. Following the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) evolving standards, Allot’s vTDF together with Allot’s Element Manager (EM) enables dynamic creation and management of pre-integrated security services such as Allot’s DDoS protection and content-filtering.

[IHS] Software is 80% of the $11.6B (on 2019) NFV Market


A new report by Michael Howard [pictured], senior research director for carrier networks, IHS forecasts that "the global network functions virtualization (NFV) hardware, software and services market to reach $11.6 billion in 2019, up from $2.3 billion in 2015. NFV represents operators’ shift from a hardware focus to software focus, and our forecasts show this. We believe NFV software will comprise over 80 percent of the $11.6 billion total NFV revenue in 2019 .. The software is always a much larger investment than the server, storage and switch hardware, representing about $4 of every $5 spent on NFV,” 

  • Service providers are still early in the long-term, 10- to 15-year transformation to virtualized networks
     
  • Revenue from outsourced services for NFV projects is projected to grow at a 71 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2014 to 2019
     
  • Revenue from software-only video content delivery network (CDN) functions for managing and distributing data is forecast by IHS to grow 30-fold from 2015 to 2019

RADCOM Adds Virtual Manager to its CEM Solution


RADCOM announced the ".. launch of MaveriQ Manager, completing the full virtualization of its MaveriQ solution .. With the launch of the MaveriQ Manager, RADCOM has now completed the virtualization of all layers of its MaveriQ solution, enabling the entire solution to reside on Cloud infrastructure. [ACG]: Mobile Core Virtualization Reduces MNOs TCO by 67% Over 5 Years


A new report by ACG Research, sponsored by Affirmed Networks and VMWare finds that "For mobile network operators (MNOs), the decision to delay network virtualization efforts can be a costly one. Every year that MNOs delay the move to network functions virtualization (NFV) cost them millions of dollars in unnecessary capital and operating expenses.

In a five-year cost comparison between MNOs with traditional and virtualized network architectures, ACG found that: 
  • MNOs that transitioned to an NFV-based platform began saving money in the first year and realize an investment payback in 3 years
  • Adopting a virtualized Evolved Packet Core (EPC) solution reduced Capex by 68% and Opex by 67% on average
  • MNOs were able to turn up a virtualized network much more quickly"



A scenario of a large-scale broadband service, compares virtualizing the following network elements; "Signaling Gateway (SGW), Packet Gateway (PGW), Policy and Charging Enforcement Function (PCEF), Subscriber Firewall, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) and Web and Video Content Management including caching, image compression, content filtering, TCP optimization, video pacing, header enrichment and gzip compression on text objects" to a traditional best of breed solution:

"the five-year cumulative TCO of the Virtualized solution is 67 percent lower than that of the Traditional solution. Virtualized Capex is 68 percent lower, and Virtualized Opex is 67 percent lower than the Traditional solution"

[Survey]: Huawei, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent are the Top IMS Vendors

  
Diane Myers [pictured], research director for VoIP, UC and IMS, IHS (Infonetics Research): "conducted in-depth interviews with global service providers that have IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) core equipment in their networks or will by the end of 2017 and discovered that only 8 percent are running IMS network elements in a network functions virtualization (NFV) environment today .. more are on the path by starting to utilize software running on commercial off-the-shelf hardware as a stepping stone to full NFV. One of the biggest drivers for NFV is the ability to scale services up and down quickly and introduce new network services more efficiently and in a timely manner, which makes IMS a good early fit for NFV".



"80 percent of service provider respondents indicated that parts of their IMS elements will be running in an NFV environment by 2017, which IHS believes is somewhat optimistic. In an open-ended question asking respondents who they consider to be the top three IMS infrastructure vendors, operators most often named Huawei, Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent"

Qosmos Goes for Open-Source NFV w/OPNFV's Arno


Qosmos announced that it "..fully endorses OPNFV Arno as the first industry-standard, open source platform facilitating adoption of NFV. 

Qosmos’ vision is that future networks will be built on components and leverage open source frameworks. For components from different suppliers to work, they will need to be interlinked with standardized interfaces defined by organizations such as ETSI, ONF, and IETF. In addition, the new component-based architecture will be structured around open source software initiatives such as OPNFV".

AT&T Will Manage Data Demand w/Software-centric Approach


Sean Buckley reports to FierceTelecom on Andre Fuetsch [pictured], senior VP of architecture and design for AT&T presentation at the TIA 2015 Network of the Future event, about how the carrier deals with the demand for data, and growth of video streaming traffic:
  • When we were predominantly a voice service provider, the capacity engineer only worried about one day out of the year, which was Mother's Day ,, it was pretty predictable ..now, traffic capacity planning for AT&T and other large telcos is all about planning for the unexpected traffic bursts caused by users viewing the latest celebrity videos online
     
  • The traffic capacity engineer has to worry about the latest Kardashian streaming video, who has been watching House of Cards [see "Procera: Netflix' House of Cards Stats; Need 27GB to See it All" - here].. the biggest event we worry about is when Apple releases their next big iOS upgrade [see "Apple IOS8 Update - DDoS Attack? Can Cache Help?" - here]
     
  • To stay on pace with these unpredictable demands, the current hardware-based network approach won't suffice. A software-centric approach will help AT&T deal with these network spikes
     
  • Unlike the telcos, web-based companies did not have the money or time to build a bottom-up network architecture. AT&T wants to adopt a similar strategy where it will build a network, applications and services in a software-centric approach
     
  • One of the first implementations that will be using this AT&T integrated cloud is our Network on Demand function, ,.. This is basically the first SDN-based service that we now recently opened up in more than 100 U.S. cities that gives enterprise customers the ability to dynamically control the bandwidth they need between their sites ..  AT&T has set possibly the most ambitious software-centric goals for its network: virtualize software control to 75 percent of network by the year 2020.

HP Acquires ConteXtream for [Estimated] Tens of Millions $


A post by Saar Gillai [pictured], SVP and General Manager, Communications Solutions Business, HP announces that "HP has signed a definitive agreement to acquire ConteXtream, a provider of OpenDaylight-based, carrier-grade SDN fabrics for NFV, and a current HP OpenNFV partner.

Headquartered in Mountain View, CA, ConteXtream offers solutions that allow service providers to create a more flexible and programmable network through an SDN/NFV model. ConteXtream’s open SDN controller platform complements HP’s NFV expertise and telecommunications and IT experience.




After the transaction closes, ConteXtream will become part of HP’s Communications Solutions Business. ConteXtream’s current CEO, Chairman, and co-founder Nachman Shelef will continue to lead the ConteXtream business within HP and will report to me".

  
ConteXtream was founded and is based in Israel. The local press estimates the acquisition price in the Tens of Millions of USD. Comcast and Verizon are among the investors, along a number of VCs.

Sandvine States 155 Gbps NFV Performance (Beats Procera by 5 Gbps)


A post to Sandvine's blog by Don Bowman [pictured], the company's CTO, provides the results of a performance test to the vitrulaized version of its Policy Traffic Switch (see "Sandvine: 'leading edge CSPs around the world are currently working with Sandvine on virtualization pilot projects'"- here).

"Our Policy Traffic Switch (PTS) Virtual Series represents a particularly significant investment, as the PTS is the very visible, very physical hardware that many people picture when they think of Sandvine.


We are happy to report that our investments are paying off: in our latest performance testing, the PTS Virtual Series reached 155 Gbps (96.8% of a theoretical maximum of the 160 Gbps line rate). Importantly, this performance was achieved while the PTS Virtual Series dealt with real-world demands: using representative traffic mixes and requiring subscriber state awareness.

.. To test the PTS Virtual Series, we used a COTS server provided by Dell (Dell R730x, Dual Intel Xeon E5-2699 v3 (Haswell) processors, Cores 36/72 vCPUs, 128GB DDR3 ECC memory with 16x 10GbE and 4x 40GbE) and configured to achieve maximum performance based on readily available hardware components"

Oracle and Intel Demo Carrier-grade Performance in a Virtualized Environment


Oracle Communications announced it has "delivered the industry’s first successful demonstration of carrier-grade network performance in a virtualized environment. The project, led by Oracle and using the Intel® Open Network Platform (ONP), demonstrates that CSPs can realize more of the promise of NFV. Specifically, the initiative proves that by intelligently directing network activity to the Intel® processor, CSPs will have more capabilities in software that were previously limited to hardware. In turn, this means that CSPs could maintain service quality levels and develop new offers for customers as soon as CSPs begin to migrate their network functions to the data center.

For this initiative, Oracle Communications optimized specific products for the Intel ONP using OpenStack open source infrastructure management software and its Enhanced Platform Awareness capabilities. The optimized products are part of Oracle’s orchestration framework, including Oracle Communications Network Service Orchestration Solution. By directing the Intel platform to dynamically establish data center resource pools that mimic the specialized characteristics of a network appliance (such as large memory pages), the orchestration software can then route the work to the correct pool, based on each function’s unique needs. Moreover, this orchestration activity can work for any network equipment vendor’s interface, preserving the CSP community’s requirement to support multi-vendor environments. Oracle and Intel contribute to and support the widely accepted OpenStack initiative".

Cyan Enables CenturyLink NFV Services to Enterprises


Cyan (See "Cyan Adds Service Management and UBB" - here) and CenturyLink announced that "CenturyLink will leverage Cyan’s Blue Planet NFV Orchestrator to deliver NFV-enhanced services to enterprise and small and midsized business (SMB) customers. Cyan will provide CenturyLink orchestration for their Programmable Services Backbone (PSB). 

..Specifically, CenturyLink will use Cyan’s Blue Planet NFV Orchestrator to bridge multiple technologies to instantiate virtual network functions (VNF) from multiple vendors. Blue Planet will add these virtual network functions to CenturyLink’s network for quickly providing software-enabled services and ubiquitous service coverage to CenturyLink’s broad set of customers.
      
Blue Planet supports multi-vendor NFV Orchestration capabilities. DSC Deployments [343]: Telekom Austria/Vip Uses Diametriq NFV Solution


Yet another component of vEPC pioneer, Vip Mobile [Serbia], NFV-based deployment (see "Telekom Austria Implements Connetem NFV-Based EPC w/Procera's DPI" - here). This time it's the Diameter routing technology.

Diametriq announced that its "Diameter Solution Suite™ is being used to power Connectem’s virtual EPC now being deployed by Telekom Austria Group to deliver a complete set of virtualized LTE network functions for its Vip mobile subsidiary in Serbia.

Connectem 
[see "Brocade Acquires Connectem" -here], one of the early adopters of Diametriq’s NFV enabled virtualized Diameter routing product, takes a service oriented view of Evolved Packet Core (EPC) functionalities. In its Virtual Core for Mobile (VCM) solution, Connectem maps the packet core functions into a computational problem, enabling network capacity (signaling, bearer or throughput) to be translated to a common computing resource requirement (CPU, memory, I/O and storage). Diametriq’s virtualized signaling router is tightly integrated with Connectem’s vEPC to seamlessly address on-demand network signaling and capacity expansions.

Instead of mobile traffic running on dedicated proprietary hardware and software, Vip mobile data is terminated in a general purpose IT data center running Intel x86 hardware and virtualization services. Additional solutions providers participating in the Serbian demonstration include Intel, VMware, Red Hat, Metaswitch, and Open Cloud
