C&W [Caribbean] Deploys Tektronix' Geoanalytics Platform



Tektronix Communications announced that "Cable & Wireless Communications will deploy its TrueCall® platform to reduce operating expenses and improve network and subscriber services.

TrueCall will be deployed for CWC networks operated under the LIME/Flow brand in the company’s Caribbean coverage area, and under the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC) brand in the Bahamas.


With TrueCall, CWC can decrease its operating costs in a variety of ways, including:
  • Remote analysis of network performance in order to minimize travel and drive-test costs and increase efficiencies
  • Deep, rapid analysis and troubleshooting of subscriber and device performance
  • Planning and optimization of network capacity
  • Analysis and optimization of roaming-device performance on its network, translating directly into revenue benefits
  • Network planning based on historical event insight, identifying trends to better plan for expansions and services"

Tektronix Adds Virtual Probe to Access Subscriber Usage Data in Real-Time

Tektronix Communications announced the ",,addition of two new solutions, GeoSoft ™ and GeoBlade ™, to its GeoProbe® family:
    • GeoSoft is a revolutionary software-only or ‘virtual’ probe that has been developed in response to a number of carrier needs, including the move towards virtualized network environments. It supports both physical and virtual networks providing real-time and historic end-to-end session trace data, network-wide KPI visibility and enables the delivery of more innovative services, thereby improving customer experience as new services are launched.  
    • GeoBlade™ combines elastic software and modular hardware, to cope with the demands of today’s massive data traffic growth, whilst providing the opportunity to scale at speed whenever needed. GeoBlade has the ability to support data transfer speeds from 10 Gbps to 100’s of Gbps, collecting and correlating massive amounts of data in real-time.  
      The GeoBlade platform enables the operators to optimize OPEX due to the ingrained capability of handling network topology, configuration and capacity management in a programmatic and automatic fashion, and improves data integrity with a built in innovative load balancing architecture. This capability to interact in real-time with service operators’ orchestration management layer also makes the GeoBlade platform a perfect choice to operate in a NFV environment where there is a need for a high density probing infrastructure".

    Newfield Wireless & Tektronix Deploy a Joint RAN Intelligence and Monitoring


    A year after Newfiled Wireless was acquired by Tektronix Communications [here], the two announced a first joint deployment:

    ".. the combined company has completed its first successful deployment of an integrated radio access solution at a top-tier mobile network operator. The deployed solution combines the valuable benefits of Newfield’s RAN geoanalytics platform, TrueCall®, with Tektronix Communications’ virtual monitoring platform, GeoSoft RAN, to provide mobile operators with a powerful, scalable and user-friendly geoanalytics-based data solution".

    NI Deployments [311]: AIS [Thailand] Selected Tektronix to Monitor VoIP and More



    Tektronix Communications announced that it has been ".. selected as the provider of monitoring & assurance solutions to optimize network performance and quality for Thailand’s market-leading operator, AIS.

    .. In Phase 1 of the project, Tektronix Communications will monitor pure voice and VoIP session traffic across all parts of the core network using its Iris Session Analyzer and Iris Packet Inspector solutions. Furthermore, given the importance of Thailand’s growing tourism industry, Tektronix Communications will also monitor and analyze inbound roaming data via its RIA solution. A small pilot will also be carried out for monitoring AIS’ Radio Access Network
    .


    At the end of Q1, 2014 AIS had 42,4M subscribers, of which 62% were on its 3G network and the rest on 2G. 33% of its revenues came from non-voice services (data) with 15.8M data subscribers.

    Tektronix Communications Acquired Newfield Wireless

       
    Tektronix Communications announced that it has ".. acquired Newfield Wireless, a privately held pioneer in next-generation mobile network optimization with geoanalytics intelligence. Newfield Wireless brings a rich layer of geoanalytics and visualization tools for the RAN, enabling MNOs to dynamically pinpoint issues at the subscriber and network level in real-time across 2G, 3G and 4G networks".

    [MarketsandMarkets] Network Analytics Market to Reach $1.7B by 2018

     
    A new research by MarketsandMarkets finds that the "The network analytics market is estimated to grow from $487.9 million in 2013 to $1672.5 million in 2018, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 27.9% from 2013 to 2018. In the current scenario, telecommunication vertical continues to be the largest contributor for network analytics solutions. In terms of regions, North America is expected to be the biggest market in terms of revenue contribution, while the APAC region is expected to experience increased market traction, in due course.

    DPI Announcements: Tektronix (ex. Arbor/Ellacoya) is Back!


    Tektronix Communications announced the ".. Deep Packet Classification (DPC) solution, which enables operators to clearly understand what services are consuming the valuable network bandwidth on a per-subscriber basis enabling them to protect and maximize their revenue-generating potential .. Tektronix Communications’ DPC offers best-in-breed data services classification across the Company’s award-winning suite of network, service and customer assurance applications. This capability provides real-time visibility of consumption and Quality of Experience on a per-customer basis to sales and marketing, and real-time visibility of resource consumption and network utilization to engineering and operations".

    I was unable to reach additional information on the new solution.

    [Guest post]: Monetizing a $3 Trillion Industry – Mobile Data Means Business

    Social media properties such as Twitter, Facebook and even Google have dominated the headlines of the world’s media. Despite the valuation of Facebook at $100 billion in its recent IPO, this figure pales into insignificance when compared to the estimated value of the global mobile telecoms industry - $3 trillion. This underlines the sheer scale of the wireless market. An image has been cultivated in the global media that mobile operators are being overrun by OTT players, riding roughshod over their networks for free. Amid diminishing ARPU figures and an increasingly challenging global market – the situation appears grim for mobile operators. However, with $3 trillion worth of assets, I believe the industry is at the top of its game and has the right mix of elements in place to spark exponential growth; dwarfing other established industries.

    Mobile data – a boost for operators

    Mobile operators spanning the globe have, in fact, been buoyed by the increased mobile data usage that social media and OTT players have generated for them. Indeed, the next challenge for operators will be how to monetise this traffic, or at the very least, introduce new business models in which they can generate a significant portion of revenue from their delivery. Mobile operators will be assisted in this process by their access to the richest vein of data that any business in the world could wish for. Each day, millions of voice calls, messages and data sessions, among other information, pass over the world’s mobile networks. This gold mine of data holds the key to carriers’ prolonged and extensive growth. Operators’ network information enables them to build up a wealth of customer information deriving context such as location, demographics, values, lifestyle and even the opinion of their end-users. Operators can now use this ‘customer lifecycle’ data as the foundation for applications and services for a new breed of ARPU data subscriber - who is willing to pay for their personalised experience.

    Information is power

    By leveraging information from multiple technology domains across their networks, operators can formulate sustainable business models focused around the delivery of mobile data. For example, operators can see, in real-time, quality of services and service usage at the end-user level – right down to the performance of the handset. This level of granular insight can form the basis for informed business decisions by an operator. For example – this high value information can be fed into the marketing and other customer facing functions in an operator. This data can form the basis for the development of a range of targeted and highly personalised services and applications. These flexible services can be tuned to meet the exacting needs of differing demographics in the subscriber base. This level of customer intimacy allows operators to truly deliver on their promises to subscribers – and this ultimately translates into higher revenues and profit margins.

    The challenges of mining data

    Having access to the right data at the right time is not an easy task – given the patchwork of technologies that makes up modern mobile networks. Network technologies have become more complex with the move to all IP networks. But as networks develop they are required to deliver mobile broaband and data services in a relaible and high quality fashion. Network environments are complex and are now made up of countless elements, interfaces and protocols. It is key for operators to be able to harness all of this disparate data and turn it into meaningful and actionable strategic information. This requires network measurement tools that can access, collect and analyse all of the information that is held in the network.

    Tools like this can help mobile operators to understand the impact of the OTT providers on their business - as well as their networks. Critically such tools enable operators to monetise the data they hold and charge OTT players that want to access it. The volume, and types of data, transported by mobile networks is growing exponentially. By leveraging network measurement tools, operators can not only optimise and monetise traffic; but also ensure their networks are as cost efficient as possible by using information mined form the network to make informed resourcing decisions.

    Bolstering service uptake

    Operators continually seek ways to up-sell and cross-sell services – but in order to do this successfully, operators need to fully understand users’ quality and usage patterns. In the past this has been something that operators have had limited ability to do. However, the detailed information they can derive from network measurement tools; empowers operators to directly align their customer resources with their customer needs.

    The advent of LTE will provide operators with an even greater insight into their customers behaviour. Intelligence from LTE networks on the types of services and the experience of users is very compelling. Operators can now sieze the opportunity and convert data from their network into bottom line profitability.

    The attention of the media and the markets continues to focus on the likes of Apple, because of the stylish form factors of its products, and Facebook, as it is poised for an IPO. But while social media brands grab the headlines; operators are happy to work in the background developing innovative business models, using network data that social media properties simply don’t have access to, to open a series of lucrative new revenue streams. It seems the $3 trillion mobile industry is on the up – despite the contrary headlines in the world’s media.

    QoS Deployments (22): Demon [UK] Offers "Game Pro" Plan - w/Traffic Prioritization

     
    Demon, a UK ISP, launched a new "Game Pro" service plan that "offers the usual benefits that Demon Broadband offers, along with lower latency and better ping rates."

    The new plan offers, for £22/month (12 months contract): Up to 20Mb downstream and 1Mb upstream, no usage restrictions off peak, 100GB peak (8am to 11pm), traffic prioritization and a free static IP address.

    A comparable plan is Demon's Home2+, with 50GB volume and no prioritization, offered for £15.28 month (24 months contract) and subject to Demon's Fair Use Policy ("FUP" - here). FUP states that "Usage will be monitored on a continuous basis. Customers that exceed the permitted data download over a rolling 30 day period will be affected by the THUS FUP. This is currently defined as per the limits detailed below, although we reserve the right to amend these limits in accordance with the terms of your Agreement. ". 

    According to KITS ("UK's largest adsl/broadband resource & information sites"), Demon is using Ellacoya (now part of Tektronix Communications) DPI products to implement FUP (here).

    Will the Game Pro subscribers just bypass the DPI process, or will Demon use the Ellacoya devices to prioritize certain [gaming] traffic? Does it remove P2P restrictions [if any]?

    Anyway, this is one of the few QoS based tiered services offering, targeting an ARPU increase of ~£6-7/month (50%!).
