JDSU/Arieso, Devicescape: LTE Users are Hungry for Data

Several reports have been published recently showing trends in bandwidth usage:
  • [JDSU/Arieso]:
    • 4G users are 10 times more data hungry than 3G users: Just 0.1% of 4G users consume more than HALF of all 4G downlink data measured
    • Phone 5s users are ‘hungriest’ data consumers finds study of more than 150 devices in developed and developing markets

    • iPhone 5s users consume seven times as much data as benchmark iPhone 3G users in developed markets, and 20 times as much data as benchmark iPhone 3G users in developing markets
See "iPhone 5s users and 4G network users now most ‘data hungry’ globally, JDSU research finds" - here.

  • David Nowicki [pictured], CMO at Devicescape - “According to our research, both mobile data and Wi-Fi usage increase dramatically, as users upgrade from 3G to 4G, and at almost the same rate. On average 4G smartphone users consume 2.1 times more mobile data per month and twice the amount of Wi-Fi that 3G smartphone users consume.

Smartphone users tend to be divided into distinctive groups with heavy data users and early adopters leading the pack and light users, which make up a significant percentage of the subscriber base, lagging behind in terms of usage. Light users are typically held back by some combination of cost, performance and complexity. These users don’t care to distinguish between Home Wi-Fi, Public Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G – they just want to be connected wherever they are".

NI Deployments [251]: MTN [Uganda] Selected JDSU/Arieso

JDSU announced that "MTN Uganda has selected its ariesoGEO platform and GEOperformance application to improve network quality and customer experience. MTN Uganda operates the country’s largest multi-vendor, multi-technology network" [JDSU acquired Arieso in March 2013 for $85 million in cash].

"JDSU’s customer-centric ariesoGEO solution will support MTN Uganda’s GSM and UMTS networks, and is ready to support the rollout of its LTE network that was launched on April 25, 2013. MTN Uganda has become the first operator in Uganda, and one of the very first in the region to successfully launch its 4G LTE network. ariesoGEO uses location intelligence to transform RAN planning and performance engineering. This increases operational efficiency and improves network performance, enhancing the customer experience".

At the end of Q1, 2013 MTN Uganda had 7.95M subscribers, if which 1.2M had data subscription. Data revenue increased 53,6% in local currency YoY.

Rami Farah [pictured], CTO, MTN Uganda said: “.. ariesoGEO will enable us to take a proactive approach to customer service, helping us react quickly to issues, while improving the quality of the overall network. As our network continues to grow, so too will customer expectations”.

NI Deployments [163]: O2 Ireland Uses Arieso to Optimize Cell Sites and Reduce Congestion

Arieso [here] announced it ".. is working with O2 Ireland to make significant improvements to its network performance. Using location-aware technology, ariesoGEO is allowing Telefonica O2 Ireland to precisely place cell sites in areas with high network demand, optimising the performance of valuable network resources, and providing detailed insights into the network quality experienced by customers .. ariesoGEO has already helped identify specific changes in data traffic in major cities during business hours, allowing Telefonica O2 Ireland to optimise its network accordingly".

"The need for more cell sites, necessary to bolster capacity constrained networks, is currently creating a significant investment challenge for mobile operators. Getting it wrong can be not just unprofitable, but can actually be making congestion on the network worse. ariesoGEO is enabling O2 Ireland to accurately place sites and monitor them to ensure they meet performance requirements".

Arieso: MNOs Need New Investment and New approaches to Manage Growing Data Demand

A recent study from Arieso  reveals "explosive growth in mobile data demand" and finds that "iPhone 4S users are the “hungriest” data consumers, demanding twice as much data as iPhone 4 users and three times as much as iPhone 3G users .. Google Nexus One users make twice as many data calls as iPhone 3G users .. The study found that different users and different devices exhibit very different demands on the network".

This can be explained by the new applications that are offered in the new models (such as Siri for the iPhone 4S - see "Siri, how much data do you gobble up in a month?" Ars investigates" - here), but probably because early adapters of new models are the savvier consumers. Arieso finds that "Just 1% of all users now consume HALF of the entire downlink data".

Dr. Michael Flanagan (pictured), CTO, Arieso, said: “.. The capacity crunch is still a very real threat for mobile operators, and it looks set to only get harder in 2012 .. The mobile industry needs new investment and new approaches to boost network performance and manage the customer experience”.
